L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) inaugurated the Kalathur Venugopal Reddy Institute of Excellence in Glaucoma at the Kallam Anji Reddy campus in Hyderabad. The institute forms part of LVPEI’s larger vision to establish “Institutes of Excellence and Global Resource Centres” dedicated to major eye conditions. These centres function as Global Resource Centres for their respective specialties.

Headed by Dr Sirisha Senthil, the institute will advance cutting-edge clinical care, education, and research in glaucoma. Mrs Mallika Reddy Kalathur, wife of Late Mr Kalathur Venugopal Reddy, inaugurated the institute in the presence of family members, marking a significant milestone in LVPEI’s commitment to glaucoma care.

Honouring a Legacy of Resilience and Service

As per the press release, LVPEI has named the Glaucoma Institute the ‘Kalathur Venugopal Reddy Glaucoma Institute’ in honour of Mr Kalathur Venugopal Reddy. A self-made entrepreneur, he led a life defined by perseverance, integrity, and service. Importantly, he lived with glaucoma and eventually experienced vision loss due to the disease.

For over a decade, the Kalathur family—led by Ms Kavitha Kalathur and Mr Ravi Kolli—has actively supported LVPEI in raising awareness and strengthening glaucoma treatment services. Through this institute, the family not only honours his personal journey but also reinforces his enduring belief in accessible, dignified, and high-quality eye care for all. Furthermore, they reaffirm their commitment to advancing research, education, and capacity building for glaucoma care across India and other developing countries.

Global Leadership in Glaucoma Care

Dr Sirisha Senthil, who will lead the institute, has recently been elected Chair of the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis (AOI). The AOI is an elite global body in ophthalmology, limited to only 100 of the world’s most distinguished academicians. The academy elects members who demonstrate sustained excellence and leadership that significantly advances ophthalmic science and care across borders.

Dr Senthil’s work has substantially shaped the modern understanding of glaucomatous diseases, particularly childhood glaucomas, secondary angle-closure glaucoma, and complex surgical management. As a clinician-scientist, she has earned international recognition for her evidence-based approach, widely cited research, compassionate patient care, and strong commitment to mentoring the next generation of ophthalmologists and clinician-scientists.

LVPEI Strengthens Its Global Academic Footprint

With Dr Senthil’s election to the AOI, LVPEI becomes the only institute in India to have three faculty members represented in this prestigious academy. She now joins the distinguished ranks of Dr Gullapalli N Rao and Dr Prashant Garg, who are also AOI members. Notably, Dr N Rao previously served as President of the AOI.

Collectively, their presence in this global body underscores LVPEI’s unwavering commitment to clinical excellence, visionary leadership, and pathbreaking research. Moreover, Dr Senthil’s appointment enhances the institute’s global visibility and reinforces its ongoing role in shaping the future of eye care, research translation, and academic thought leadership.
