The Maharashtra government has expanded health insurance coverage to include PET-CT scans under the Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MJPJAY) and Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY). This decision will help eligible cancer patients access essential diagnostic services while reducing their out-of-pocket medical expenses. The state Public Health Department has issued a Government Resolution (GR) adding PET-CT scans as an additional diagnostic procedure under 63 cancer treatment packages.
PET-CT Scans Added to 63 Cancer Treatment Packages
PET-CT scans play a crucial role in detecting cancer, determining the stage of the disease and monitoring patients’ responses to treatment. By including these scans under 63 cancer treatment packages, the government aims to improve access to advanced diagnostic services for eligible beneficiaries. Furthermore, the decision will help patients obtain essential investigations without bearing the full cost of these expensive procedures themselves.
Standalone Diagnostic Coverage for 13 Cancer Types
The government has also included PET-CT scans as a standalone or primary diagnostic procedure for 13 specific types of cancer. This provision will enable eligible patients to access the scan under the applicable health schemes, subject to the relevant package conditions.
Move to Reduce Cancer Treatment Expenses
Previously, many cancer patients had to pay for PET-CT scans out of their own pockets, adding to the financial burden of diagnosis and treatment. With the inclusion of these scans under MJPJAY and Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY, eligible beneficiaries can receive greater financial support for cancer diagnostics. As reported by newsonair.gov.in, the decision marks a step towards improving access to advanced cancer care in Maharashtra while strengthening financial protection for patients and their families.
