Immunization remains one of the most significant achievements in public health, as it continues to protect individuals and communities from life-threatening infectious diseases. However, despite notable progress in vaccination programmes, gaps in awareness and access still persist, posing ongoing challenges.
Marking World Immunization Week 2026
To commemorate World Immunization Week (April 24–30, 2026), doctors at M’Brace by Kamineni Hospitals conducted an awareness initiative to emphasise the importance of vaccines in building a healthier society. This year’s theme, “For every generation, vaccines work,” highlights the need to protect individuals across all age groups while strengthening public trust in immunization.
India’s Expansive Immunization Efforts
India operates one of the world’s largest vaccination programmes under the Universal Immunization Programme, covering nearly 29 million pregnant women and 26.5 million infants annually. Moreover, experts stressed that vaccines not only protect individuals but also reduce the spread of infections by building community-level immunity.
Vaccines work by strengthening the immune system, enabling the body to recognise and fight harmful bacteria and viruses. As a result, they offer long-term protection against serious diseases such as polio, measles, rubella, diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, hepatitis B, rotavirus infection, pneumococcal disease, and HPV-related cancers. Therefore, timely immunization, combined with proper healthcare access, can significantly lower the burden of infectious diseases.
Expert Insights on the Importance of Vaccination
Highlighting its impact, Dr. S. Narasimha Rao, Senior Consultant Paediatrician at M’Brace, stated that immunization has transformed child healthcare over the years. He noted that many infectious diseases that once caused widespread illness are now preventable due to vaccines. However, he cautioned that incomplete vaccination and lack of awareness remain concerns. He emphasised that following the recommended immunization schedule is essential to ensure complete protection for children.
Adding to this, Dr. Kanchan S. Channawar, Consultant Pediatrician and Pediatric Intensivist at M’Brace, explained that a large proportion of severe infections seen in critical care settings are preventable through vaccination. She pointed out that immunization not only reduces disease severity but also lowers hospital admissions and the need for intensive care. Furthermore, she stressed that addressing vaccine hesitancy through proper counselling and awareness is key to improving vaccination uptake.
Protecting Newborns and Ensuring Equity
As per the press release, Dr. R. V. Soujanya, Consultant Paediatrician and Neonatologist at M’Brace, highlighted that immunization begins at birth and plays a vital role in protecting newborns and infants during their most vulnerable stages. She noted that maternal vaccination and early childhood immunization significantly improve survival rates and long-term health outcomes. Additionally, she emphasised that ensuring equitable access to vaccines for every child is essential for building a healthier society.
