Merck and Mayo Clinic Announce Strategic AI-Driven R&D Collaboration

Merck (NYSE: MRK), known as MSD outside the United States and Canada, has entered into a major research and development agreement with Mayo Clinic, the world’s top-ranked hospital system. Through this collaboration, both organisations will apply artificial intelligence (AI), advanced analytics, and multimodal clinical data to accelerate drug discovery and development.

By combining their respective strengths, the two institutions aim to enhance disease understanding, improve target identification, and strengthen early development decision-making.

Integrating AI, Clinical Data and Virtual Cell Technologies

Under the agreement, Merck will integrate Mayo Clinic’s platform architecture, clinical insights, and genomic datasets with its own AI-enabled virtual cell technologies. Specifically, the collaboration will leverage computational and spatial biology tools powered by AI and machine learning (ML).

Mayo Clinic Platform brings together data from Mayo Clinic in the U.S. and its international partner network within a secure environment. As a result, Merck will gain access to high-quality, de-identified multimodal datasets, including clinical records, registries, biorepositories, and molecular data.

Furthermore, the Mayo Clinic Platform_Orchestrate program will provide Merck direct access to Mayo Clinic’s clinical and scientific expertise, advanced AI tools, analytics capabilities, and scalable solutions.

First-of-Its-Kind Strategic Collaboration

Notably, this agreement represents Mayo Clinic’s first strategic collaboration of this scale with a global biopharmaceutical company. Through this partnership, Merck will utilise extensive multimodal data—including laboratory results, medical imaging, clinical notes, and genomic information—to validate AI models and translate research insights into actionable drug discovery strategies.

Consequently, the collaboration aims to improve the efficiency and probability of success in drug development programs.

Leadership Perspectives on the Partnership

As per the Merck Press release, Robert M. Davis, Chairman and CEO of Merck, emphasised that emerging technologies are transforming innovation in healthcare. He stated that by integrating high-quality clinical data and AI-driven insights into discovery research, Merck intends to improve target identification and ultimately increase the likelihood of successful therapeutic development.

Similarly, Gianrico Farrugia, M.D., President and CEO of Mayo Clinic, highlighted the transformative potential of the partnership. He explained that combining Mayo Clinic Platform’s de-identified data and clinical expertise with Merck’s research capabilities could accelerate breakthroughs and redefine modern drug development. Moreover, he described the collaboration as a step toward a future where platform-based partnerships generate more answers, more cures, and better patient outcomes worldwide.

Initial Focus on High-Need Therapeutic Areas

Initially, the collaboration will concentrate on three high-need therapeutic areas where advanced analytics and multimodal approaches can drive meaningful progress:

  • Gastroenterology: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
  • Dermatology: Atopic dermatitis
  • Neurology: Multiple sclerosis

By targeting these complex diseases, the partners aim to develop more effective and personalised therapies.

This agreement builds on Merck’s broader investments in AI and ML-enabled discovery across computational biology, spatial biology, AI foundation models, and real-world data analytics. At the same time, it reflects a shared commitment to applying advanced technologies responsibly and within a disciplined, evidence-based framework.
