MicrobioTx Highlights Growing Link Between Gut Health and Mental Wellbeing

As discussions around mental wellbeing continue to gain momentum during Mental Health Awareness Week 2026, MicrobioTx is highlighting the growing scientific evidence connecting gut health with emotional and mental wellness.

Emerging research increasingly suggests that the gut microbiome — the trillions of bacteria and microorganisms living in the digestive system — plays a critical role in stress response, mood regulation, sleep quality, anxiety management, and cognitive health.

Gut Functions as the Body’s “Second Brain”

Experts often refer to the gut as the body’s “second brain” because it constantly communicates with the brain through the gut-brain axis.

Studies indicate that psychiatric conditions co-exist in nearly 60% of individuals with gastrointestinal disorders, further demonstrating the important role gut health plays in regulating mental wellbeing. Additionally, scientific evidence suggests that imbalances in gut bacteria may increase stress sensitivity and contribute to anxiety and depressive symptoms.

Highlighting this growing understanding, Dr. Mahima Malhotra, Principal Investigator and Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Maulana Azad Medical College, said, “Science is increasingly proving that the gut is the architect of mental wellness. In my practice, I frequently observe gut-related issues in individuals suffering from psychiatric conditions. In the future, therapeutic approaches will increasingly integrate gut health interventions.”

Gut Bacteria Influence Mood and Emotional Health

According to research conducted by MicrobioTx, beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium contribute to the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin and GABA, both of which are closely associated with mood regulation and emotional balance.

Furthermore, nearly 90% of serotonin — commonly known as the “feel-good” chemical — is produced in the gut. As a result, maintaining a balanced microbiome is becoming an increasingly important aspect of holistic wellness discussions.

Dr. Palok Aich, Dean R&D at National Institute of Science Education and Research and a leading gut microbiome researcher, said, “Gut health is no longer limited to digestive wellness. We are increasingly recognising its deep connection with mental wellbeing, sleep, immunity, and overall quality of life. As awareness around preventive and personalised healthcare grows, gut health will play a larger role in the future of mental wellness.”

The company’s Gut Function Test was recently validated in a clinical study for profiling gut microbes associated with mental wellness.

In addition, the company offers MoodTx, a scientifically designed probiotic intended to support stress management, anxiety reduction, depression care, and sleep quality through targeted microbiome support.

Clinical Study Reports Encouraging Outcomes

A study conducted across three centres with the involvement of a wellness therapist, consultant psychologist, and neuropsychiatrist reported encouraging results among participants using MoodTx.

Key findings from the study included:

  • 100% of participants with anxiety and depression reported over 50% improvement in symptoms
  • 86% showed improvement across stress, anxiety, and depression indicators
  • 75% of participants experiencing stress reported symptom improvement

These findings further reflect the growing global shift toward preventive, personalised, and microbiome-based healthcare approaches.
