Multi-Omics Identifies New Targets for Gallbladder Cancer

Researchers are using multi-omics analysis to better understand gallbladder cancer and identify potential biomarkers and treatment targets. The approach combines data from genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics and microbiomics to provide a broader view of how the cancer develops and progresses.

Gallbladder cancer remains one of the most aggressive cancers of the biliary tract. Moreover, doctors often diagnose it at a late stage, while its molecular diversity makes treatment more challenging.

Molecular Profiling Could Improve Treatment

The review found that integrating multiple molecular datasets can reveal molecular subtypes, biomarkers and actionable therapeutic targets. Consequently, this information could help doctors diagnose the disease earlier, identify suitable treatments and monitor patients more effectively.

As per EMJ Reviews, researchers are also exploring liquid biopsies and AI-driven analysis to interpret complex molecular data and support less-invasive disease monitoring and personalised treatment decisions.

Challenges Remain

However, researchers still face several barriers before these discoveries can enter routine clinical practice. Limited tissue samples, inadequate representation of gallbladder cancer in global datasets and a shortage of cancer-specific clinical trials make it difficult to validate new biomarkers and treatments.
