NMC Issues Notices to Over 100 Medical Colleges Over Patient Load and Staff Shortages

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued notices to more than 100 medical colleges across India for failing to meet required standards related to patient numbers and staff availability. The regulator has directed these institutions to correct the identified gaps within 45 days.

The NMC has been reviewing medical colleges before the upcoming admission cycle to ensure that they maintain the infrastructure, patient flow, and faculty strength they committed to while receiving approval.

Shortcomings in Patient Load and Staffing

According to the reported findings, several medical colleges did not meet the mandatory patient attendance and staffing requirements. For a medical college with 150 MBBS seats, NMC norms require an average daily Outpatient Department (OPD) attendance of 800 patients, around 480 admitted patients in the teaching hospital, and adequate doctors and support staff.

However, inspections reportedly found that some institutions had lower patient numbers and insufficient staff strength. As per Medical Dialogues, the NMC has taken this action after identifying concerns over compliance with essential medical education standards.

Possible Action Against Non-Compliant Colleges

Furthermore, colleges that fail to resolve these issues within the given timeline may face regulatory action. The NMC could restrict such institutions from participating in future MBBS admission processes if they do not meet the required standards.

The move highlights the regulator’s focus on improving the quality of medical education and ensuring that students receive proper clinical exposure and training facilities.
