Novo Nordisk, a global leader in chronic disease care, has announced a strategic collaboration with Apollo Clinics to roll out a comprehensive Obesity Management Program across multiple cities in India. The initiative seeks to address the country’s rising obesity burden through a structured, multi-tiered model that empowers individuals living with overweight or obesity while creating specialized care programs.
Integrating a Comprehensive Care Framework
Under this partnership, Apollo Clinics and Novo Nordisk will implement an integrated framework for obesity management at select centres. Apollo Clinics will contribute its expertise in running condition management programs by offering infrastructure, clinical pathways, and digital patient support tools. Together, the two organizations will deliver evidence-based obesity care with a strong focus on patient engagement.
Patient Awareness and Digital Tools
As per the press release, the program will feature dedicated awareness campaigns, including educational videos, booklets, and body composition analysis. In addition, a QR-enabled platform will provide access to tools such as BMI and waist-to-height ratio calculators, helping users connect with appropriate care pathways.
Transforming Obesity Recognition and Care
Dr. Maya Sharma, Vice President – Clinical, Medical & Regulatory, Novo Nordisk India, emphasized the urgent need for action:
“The prevalence of obesity continues to rise in India, yet clinical recognition remains inadequate. Novo Nordisk aims to transform how obesity is understood, diagnosed, and managed at the primary level. Through this partnership, we will equip healthcare professionals with education, patient-centric tools, and infrastructure to deliver personalized, evidence-based care. Together with Apollo Clinics, we hope to drive lasting behavioral and health outcomes, improving the quality of life for millions of Indians living with obesity.”
Strengthening Apollo Clinics’ Commitment
Mr. Sriram Iyer, CEO – Apollo Health & Lifestyle Limited, reaffirmed the organization’s focus:
“This partnership reinforces our long-standing commitment to tackling obesity and related conditions. Apollo Clinics, with its wide-reaching network, along with Novo Nordisk’s global expertise, will deliver structured, evidence-based support to patients across India. Our goal is to create an accessible, sustainable, and patient-centric care model.”
Obesity: A Growing Health Challenge in India
Obesity currently affects more than 250 million adults in India. It is linked to over 230 health complications, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and sleep apnoea. Its prevalence varies significantly across states, ranging from 8% to 50%, and cuts across both urban and rural populations in men and women alike. The economic impact is equally alarming, with obesity-related diseases projected to cost India nearly ₹36,000 crores by 2030.
Driving Change Through Partnership
Novo Nordisk and Apollo Clinics recognize obesity as a chronic disease, not just a lifestyle issue. They are advancing a program that combines innovative treatments, patient education, and advocacy. Through their joint commitment, Novo Nordisk and Apollo Clinics will empower healthcare providers with resources to deliver sustainable, long-term outcomes, ultimately changing how India addresses obesity.
