Novo Nordisk announced on Wednesday that it plans to introduce its blockbuster weight-loss drug Wegovy in vial format. The company confirmed that it is actively exploring multiple device presentations for the product.
“We are exploring various device presentations for Wegovy, including vials — some are launching this year, while others will follow in the future,” the company stated.
As reported by Reuters, currently, Novo markets Wegovy in injectable and oral formulations. By expanding into vials, the company aims to broaden patient access and strengthen its competitive positioning.
Competition Intensifies with Eli Lilly
Meanwhile, rival Eli Lilly has already moved into the vial segment. In 2024, Lilly began selling vials of the two lowest doses of its obesity drug Zepbound. Subsequently, the company reduced the price of Zepbound vials by $50 or more and expanded the range of doses available through online sales channels.
As a result, pricing and accessibility have become central strategies in the escalating obesity-drug market battle.
Battle for Market Leadership
Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly remain locked in a fierce competition for dominance in the fast-growing obesity treatment segment. Notably, Zepbound overtook Wegovy in U.S. prescription volumes last year, marking a significant shift in market leadership.
Against this backdrop, Novo’s decision to explore vial presentations signals a strategic effort to regain momentum and reclaim its leading position in the weight-loss drug market.
