Single-Stage TERPT Surgery at KIMS Cuddles Kurnool Saves Newborn’s Life

In a rare and critical medical intervention, doctors at KIMS Cuddles successfully performed a complex surgery on a newborn just seven days after birth, ultimately saving the infant’s life.

Early Warning Signs Raise Concern

The baby, born to a couple from Gadwal district in Telangana, failed to pass stools even 48 hours after birth. This delay immediately raised concern among the parents, who then rushed the child to KIMS Cuddles, Kurnool for further evaluation.

Diagnosis: Hirschsprung’s Disease

Upon thorough examination, the medical team diagnosed the newborn with Hirschsprung’s disease. This condition occurs when nerve cells responsible for bowel movement are absent in a segment of the intestine. Consequently, the affected portion cannot relax, which obstructs the normal passage of stool. As a result, the baby developed abdominal distension and faced the risk of severe complications, including infection.

As per the press release, Dr. Sai Prasuna, Consultant Pediatric Urologist, emphasized that the first 48 hours after birth are crucial. She noted that failure to pass stools during this period serves as a significant surgical warning sign.

Condition Worsens Rapidly

As time progressed without bowel movement, the baby’s condition deteriorated. By the second day, the infant developed abdominal swelling and greenish vomiting, clearly indicating intestinal obstruction and escalating urgency for intervention.

Advanced Single-Stage Surgical Approach

Given the severity, the doctors decided to proceed with surgery on the seventh day after birth. Traditionally, Hirschsprung’s disease requires a two-stage procedure involving a temporary colostomy followed by corrective surgery.

However, the team at KIMS Cuddles adopted an advanced Transanal Endorectal Pull-Through (TERPT) procedure. This minimally invasive technique allowed surgeons to correct the defect in a single stage without any external incisions.

Dr. Sai Prasuna explained that this approach eliminates the need for a colostomy bag, reduces surgical trauma, avoids visible scars, and significantly speeds up recovery.

Successful Outcome and Recovery

Following the procedure, the newborn responded well to treatment and showed steady recovery. The successful intervention not only saved the baby’s life but also ensured a better quality of life without the need for multiple surgeries.

Doctors Urge Early Detection

Furthermore, doctors cautioned parents against ignoring persistent constipation in newborns and children. While some cases may appear routine, Hirschsprung’s disease does not respond to medication and can lead to a life-threatening condition known as enterocolitis if left untreated.

Therefore, parents should seek immediate medical attention if a newborn exhibits warning signs such as refusal to feed, greenish vomiting, abdominal distension, or failure to pass stools within the first 48 hours.
