Doctors at Dr. Mehta’s Hospitals, Chetpet, successfully treated a 36-year-old Sri Lankan man who had experienced severe burning pelvic pain for nearly a year.
The pain significantly affected his daily life and persisted despite months of medication in Sri Lanka. He travelled to Chennai in March 2026 and consulted Prof. Dr. Premkumar M, Head of Anaesthesia and Senior Interventional Pain Management Specialist at Dr. Mehta’s Hospitals.
Treating the Source of Nerve-Related Pain
Following a detailed evaluation, doctors found that the patient had previously suffered from transverse myelitis, a rare inflammatory condition affecting the spinal cord. The condition had caused significant nerve damage in the pelvic region, resulting in persistent pain.
The team recommended a minimally invasive approach. The patient subsequently underwent Superior Hypogastric Plexus and Pudendal Neurolysis with Radiofrequency Ablation, performed through tiny needle punctures.
The procedure targeted the affected nerves and interrupted pain signals travelling from the pelvic region to the brain, avoiding the need for major surgery. As per the hospital press release, the patient experienced significant pain relief and returned to his normal routine following the procedure.
Specialist Highlights Early Evaluation
Prof. Dr. Premkumar M said:
“Chronic nerve-related pelvic pain can be profoundly disabling and is often difficult to manage with medications alone. In carefully selected patients, targeted interventional procedures can provide substantial pain relief and significantly improve quality of life while avoiding major surgery.”
He added that persistent or unexplained pelvic pain, particularly in people with a history of spinal cord or nerve disorders, should not be ignored. Early specialist evaluation can help identify the underlying cause and guide appropriate treatment.
