In a remarkable medical turnaround, 19-year-old Ashfaq from Mauritius overcame the threat of losing his right leg after a devastating road accident. Initially advised for a below-knee amputation, he regained full function of his foot through regenerative therapy at StemRx Hospital & Research Centre in Navi Mumbai, led by Dr. Pradeep Mahajan, Regenerative Medicine Researcher and Founder of the hospital.
Tragic Accident in Mauritius
In March 2025, Ashfaq was riding as a rear passenger on a motorbike when a motor vehicle rammed into them. The impact crushed his right foot between two vehicles. Despite wearing a helmet and following safety precautions, he sustained multiple fractures and extensive soft tissue damage. Emergency medical care in Mauritius included wound cleaning, debridement, vessel ligation, and suturing.
Diagnosis and Grim Prognosis
As per the press release, CT scans revealed shattered bones, displaced fragments, joint dislocations, and a large soft tissue hematoma. Local doctors advised surgery but warned that tissue death could lead to inevitable amputation. Determined to avoid losing his leg, Ashfaq contacted StemRx in Mauritius, which referred him to their main facility in Navi Mumbai for advanced regenerative treatment.
Specialized Non-Surgical Treatment at StemRx
Upon arrival in India on a stretcher with his father, Ashfaq faced a destroyed foot, severe bone fractures, and tissue damage. A multidisciplinary team at StemRx designed a tailored four-month recovery plan. His treatment combined regenerative therapies, repeated wound care, infection control with antibiotics, skin and bone grafting, and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT).
A key intervention was MDI therapy, which mimics the body’s natural insulin release pattern. This approach accelerated tissue and bone healing, reduced inflammation, improved circulation, limited harmful fat byproducts, and promoted nerve recovery.
Gradual Recovery and Restoration of Mobility
With consistent therapy and close monitoring, Ashfaq’s wounds healed, bones realigned, and tissue regenerated. By the end of his treatment, he could walk, climb stairs, and perform daily activities without assistance. Dr. Mahajan emphasized that untreated crush injuries can lead to permanent damage, gangrene, or life-threatening complications such as crush syndrome.
A Second Chance at Life
Reflecting on his journey, Ashfaq said, “When doctors in Mauritius told me I might lose my leg, my world collapsed. I could not imagine life with one leg. But coming to StemRx felt like finding light in complete darkness. Dr. Mahajan and his team didn’t just save my foot—they gave me back my strength, dignity, and hope. I will forever be grateful for this second chance.”
Moving Forward
Ashfaq returned to Mauritius on his feet, without needing a walker. Doctors have advised him to avoid excessive strain, wear protective footwear, maintain a healthy diet, continue physiotherapy, and follow strict hygiene practices. His case stands as a powerful example of how regenerative medicine can transform outcomes for trauma patients, turning what once seemed impossible into a story of resilience and recovery.
