Yashoda Hospitals Performs Complex Double Lung Transplant on 47-Year-Old with Advanced Fibrotic Lung Disease

Yashoda Hospitals, Hitec City has successfully performed a complex double lung transplant on a 47-year-old patient with Anti-synthetase Syndrome-associated Fibrotic Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD). The procedure gave the patient a new lease on life after nearly two years of oxygen dependence and further strengthened the hospital’s expertise in treating advanced lung diseases.

Life-Saving Procedure

The patient had progressive fibrotic ILD, a condition that causes irreversible scarring of the lungs and severe respiratory failure. Despite optimal medical treatment, his condition continued to worsen. Following a comprehensive evaluation, doctors determined that a bilateral (double) lung transplant was the only definitive treatment.

As per the press release, the transplant was performed by a multidisciplinary team led by Dr. V. Nagarjuna Maturu, Clinical Director, Department of Pulmonology, along with Dr. Manjunath Bale, Lung Transplant Surgeon, and specialists from cardiothoracic surgery, transplant pulmonology, anaesthesia, and critical care.

Successful Recovery

The surgery was completed without complications. The patient was gradually weaned off oxygen, regained functional independence, and was discharged just 10 days after the procedure.

Dr. V. Nagarjuna Maturu said timely referral, careful patient selection, and coordinated multidisciplinary care are key to successful lung transplantation in patients with advanced fibrotic ILD. Dr. Manjunath Bale added that the successful outcome reflects the expertise and seamless teamwork required for one of the most complex thoracic procedures.
