Doctors at Wockhardt Hospitals Mumbai Central successfully performed a minimally invasive mitral valve replacement on a 20-year-old woman suffering from severe mitral valve regurgitation. The advanced procedure relieved her symptoms, minimised scarring, and helped her return to normal life within a week.
Progressive Symptoms Led to Diagnosis
The patient had been experiencing worsening breathlessness that gradually began affecting her daily routine. Investigations revealed severe mitral valve regurgitation, a condition in which the heart’s mitral valve does not close properly, causing blood to flow backward. If left untreated, the condition can lead to heart failure, reduced physical capacity, and other serious complications.
Considering her young age, the medical team opted for a minimally invasive approach to ensure faster recovery and better cosmetic outcomes.
Smaller Incision, Faster Recovery
The surgery was performed through a small right inframammary incision with the support of the Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery (CVTS) team, avoiding the conventional breastbone incision used in open-heart surgery.
According to Dr. Parin Sangoi, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Wockhardt Hospitals Mumbai Central, minimally invasive mitral valve replacement offers significant benefits in carefully selected patients, including reduced surgical trauma, less postoperative pain, quicker recovery, and minimal scarring. He added that these advantages are especially valuable for younger patients, improving both recovery and confidence.
Excellent Outcome
As per the press release, the surgery was completed successfully with virtually no visible scar. The patient recovered rapidly, experienced significant improvement in her symptoms, and resumed her normal routine within a week.
The case demonstrates how advances in minimally invasive cardiac surgery are enabling patients with complex heart conditions to achieve excellent clinical outcomes while reducing the physical and emotional impact of surgery.
