Rare Orthopaedic Surgery Restores Mobility
Doctors at Amor Hospitals have helped a 34-year-old man walk again after he remained bedridden for nearly three years following a severe traumatic brain injury.
The patient sustained a critical head injury in a road accident three years ago and underwent multiple life-saving neurosurgical procedures. However, he later developed severe deformities in both lower limbs, leaving him unable to stand or walk independently.
Complex Bone Formation Locked His Lower Limbs
A detailed evaluation revealed Neurogenic Heterotopic Ossification (HO) in both hips. This rare complication of severe brain injury causes abnormal bone formation in muscles and soft tissues.
As a result, the patient developed severe contractures in his hips, knees and ankles, which effectively locked his legs and prevented normal movement.
Staged Surgery Restores Ability to Walk
An orthopaedic team at Amor Hospitals planned and performed a complex, staged reconstructive surgery. The doctors operated on the right leg on July 21, 2026, and the left leg on July 27, 2026.
As per the press release, the surgery successfully restored the patient’s upright posture and functional weight-bearing ability. For the first time in three years, he can now stand and walk with assistance.
He is currently undergoing intensive rehabilitation, including specialised physiotherapy and gait training, to improve his strength, balance and independence.

Dr. Kishore B Reddy and his team, Orthopaedic Surgeons at Amor Hospitals, said that neurogenic heterotopic ossification is one of the most challenging complications following severe brain injuries. They noted that the case required careful surgical planning and a staged approach to remove abnormal bone and correct multiple joint contractures.
The doctors added that the patient’s ability to stand and take steps after three years demonstrates how advanced reconstructive orthopaedic surgery combined with structured rehabilitation can restore mobility and improve quality of life.

The successful surgery highlights the importance of specialised orthopaedic care and multidisciplinary rehabilitation for patients with complex post-traumatic disabilities.
