Doctors at Yashoda Hospitals, Malakpet, Hyderabad, successfully performed a rare beating-heart triple bypass surgery on a 61-year-old man from Wanaparthy district who had critical left main coronary artery disease, triple-vessel disease, and type 2 diabetes.
The patient had experienced recurrent left-sided chest pain for nearly six months. Further cardiac evaluation revealed severe blockages in the left main coronary artery and multiple major blood vessels supplying the heart, putting him at high risk of heart attack, heart failure, and sudden cardiac death. Therefore, the cardiac team recommended immediate bypass surgery.
Bypass Performed Without Heart-Lung Machine
Dr. Vengal Reddy S., Consultant Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgeon, performed the surgery using Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (OPCAB ×3). This technique allows surgeons to perform bypass surgery while the heart continues to beat, without using a heart-lung machine.
As per the press release, the surgical team successfully completed three bypass grafts. However, the procedure became more challenging because the patient also required coronary endarterectomy on a diseased segment of the right coronary artery. Despite the complexity, the surgery was completed without major intra-operative complications.
“Patients with left main coronary artery disease and triple vessel disease are at extremely high risk of major cardiac events. Performing bypass surgery on a beating heart requires a high level of surgical expertise,” said Dr. Vengal Reddy. He added that timely diagnosis, careful planning, and early intervention contributed to the successful outcome.
Smooth Recovery After High-Risk Surgery
Following the procedure, the patient was shifted to the cardiac critical care unit for ventilatory support, haemodynamic monitoring, diabetes management, physiotherapy, and intensive CT-ICU care.

The patient showed steady improvement, was extubated on the first postoperative day, began mobilising early, and was subsequently discharged in stable condition.
