Doctors at Kamineni Hospitals successfully performed a complex radical nephrectomy (complete removal of a cancer-affected kidney) on a 91-year-old patient diagnosed with an aggressive form of Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC), demonstrating that advanced age need not be a barrier to curative cancer treatment.
High-Risk Surgery Successfully Performed
The patient, Sri Subhramanyam, a retired Central Government employee, was diagnosed with a large tumour in his right kidney. After a comprehensive medical evaluation, a multidisciplinary team found him fit for surgery despite the increased risks associated with operating on a nonagenarian. As per the hospital’s press release, the team carefully planned the procedure to minimise complications.
Dr. G. Avinash Reddy, Senior Consultant Surgical Oncologist at Kamineni Hospitals, led the surgery with support from anaesthesiologists, intensivists, nurses and physiotherapists. The team successfully removed the cancer-affected kidney after carefully dissecting around the inferior vena cava and isolating the renal artery and vein, while keeping blood loss to a minimum.

Following the operation, the patient received intensive post-operative care, including continuous cardiac and kidney monitoring, specialised respiratory support, early mobilisation and personalised pain management. He is recovering well, and his remaining kidney is functioning normally.
Speaking on the successful outcome, Dr. Avinash Reddy said the case shows that age alone should never determine whether a patient receives cancer treatment. He added that careful patient selection, meticulous surgical planning and a multidisciplinary approach can deliver excellent outcomes even in patients over 90 years of age.
