Adayu, Fortis Healthcare’s psychiatry and deaddiction hospital, opened a Behavioural Addiction Clinic in Gurugram to assess and address concerns related to gaming, gambling, problematic digital and social media use, and other behavioural patterns that affect daily functioning. Located at Adayu in Sector 38, Gurugram, the clinic will operate from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM, Monday to Saturday. It will offer psychiatric and psychological assessments, multidisciplinary treatment, individual and family therapy where appropriate, and personalised lifestyle guidance based on each patient’s needs.
Clinical Assessment to Identify Behavioural Health Concerns
The World Health Organization’s International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) recognises gaming disorder and gambling disorder as disorders due to addictive behaviours. However, frequent digital or social media use does not automatically indicate an addiction and requires individual assessment. When a person struggles to control a behaviour despite its harmful effects, it can disrupt sleep, emotional well-being, relationships, education and work. Therefore, a clinical assessment helps professionals understand the nature and severity of the concern, identify associated mental health conditions and recommend appropriate treatment.
Fortis Healthcare Highlights the Importance of Early Intervention
Dr Bishnu Panigrahi, Group Head – Medical Strategy and Operations at Fortis Healthcare, emphasised the importance of careful assessment and personalised care for behavioural addictions and related concerns. He noted that treatment may involve collaboration among mental health professionals and, where appropriate, support for family members. Early identification and interventions tailored to individual needs can help address difficulties before they significantly disrupt daily life.
Adayu Emphasises Awareness and Family Support
Dr Samir Parikh, Chairperson of the Fortis National Mental Health Program and Adayu, clarified that frequent gaming or digital use does not necessarily constitute an addiction. He explained that concern arises when individuals find it difficult to control a behaviour and continue despite significant harm or disruption to their daily activities. Accordingly, clinicians assess each person’s circumstances and the impact on their functioning before recommending appropriate support. Dr Parikh also highlighted the role of families in recognising potential warning signs and supporting individuals throughout their care journey.
Strengthening Access to Behavioural Mental Healthcare
With the launch of this specialised clinic, Adayu aims to strengthen access to behavioural mental healthcare in Gurugram. As per the press release, by combining clinical assessment, multidisciplinary treatment and family support where appropriate, the facility seeks to help individuals address behavioural concerns and improve their overall well-being.
