Doctors at Apex Superspeciality Hospital in Borivali, part of the Apex Group of Hospitals, successfully removed a large pituitary tumour from a 50-year-old man who experienced progressively deteriorating vision in both eyes. The tumour had compressed his optic nerves, raising concerns about potential vision loss.

MRI Reveals Tumour Compressing Optic Nerves

Following a detailed clinical evaluation, doctors performed Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), which revealed a large pituitary tumour pressing against the optic nerve pathways. These nerves transmit visual information from the eyes to the brain. As pituitary tumours grow, they can compress these pathways, causing progressive visual impairment. Without timely treatment, patients may experience severe or potentially permanent vision loss.

Minimally Invasive Surgery Removes the Tumour

Considering the tumour’s location and its impact on the patient’s vision, the medical team opted for an advanced endoscopic endonasal surgical approach. This minimally invasive technique allows surgeons to access the tumour through the nasal passage without performing conventional open skull surgery. The procedure enabled the surgical team to remove the tumour completely and relieve pressure on the optic nerves, thereby addressing the underlying cause of the patient’s visual deterioration. Dr. Samir Parekh, Consultant Neurosurgeon at Apex Superspeciality Hospital, Borivali, performed the surgery.

Patient Recovers and Is Discharged on Fifth Day

As per the press release, following the operation, the medical team closely monitored the patient’s recovery and checked for potential post-operative complications. His recovery progressed satisfactorily, and doctors discharged him on the fifth day after surgery. The pituitary gland is a small but vital gland located at the base of the brain. It regulates several essential hormones that control important bodily functions. Because the pituitary gland lies close to the optic nerves, a growing tumour can compress the visual pathways and interfere with eyesight. Therefore, early diagnosis and timely medical intervention are essential to prevent further deterioration and reduce the risk of serious complications.

Neurosurgeon Highlights Importance of Timely Intervention

Dr. Samir Parekh, Consultant Neurosurgeon at Apex Superspeciality Hospital, Borivali, said, “When a large pituitary tumour compresses the optic nerves, timely intervention becomes extremely important to prevent further visual deterioration. Endoscopic endonasal surgery allows us to access the tumour through the nose without opening the skull. Our objective was to achieve complete tumour removal and relieve the pressure on the visual pathways while minimising surgical trauma.”
