AliveCor, a global leader in AI-powered cardiology, has introduced the Kardia 12L electrocardiogram (ECG) system in India. Designed exclusively for healthcare professionals, it is the world’s first AI-powered, handheld 12-lead ECG system with a unique single-cable design. The device can detect life-threatening cardiac conditions, including heart attacks, using a reduced leadset.

Regulatory Approval and Clinical Capabilities

The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has approved Kardia 12L for use in India. The system detects 35 cardiac determinations—including 14 arrhythmias and 21 morphologies—covering serious conditions such as acute myocardial infarction (MI) and common forms of cardiac ischemia.

Making Cardiac Diagnostics More Accessible

Priya Abani, CEO of AliveCor, highlighted the device’s role in strengthening healthcare delivery:

“Kardia 12L enables physicians to rapidly detect heart diseases across diverse healthcare settings, making this critical medical device more accessible than ever. Its launch in India is a big win for physicians and patients, especially at a time when the healthcare system urgently needs access and efficiency.”

Addressing India’s Growing Heart Disease Burden

India faces an alarming challenge, with cardiovascular diseases projected to cause an economic loss of $2.17 trillion between 2012 and 2030. While conventional 12-lead ECG machines remain the gold standard, their size and complexity restrict usage largely to hospital settings. To overcome this, AI-powered solutions like Kardia 12L promise to deliver affordable and accessible cardiac diagnostics at the point of care.

Revolutionizing ECG Screening with AI

Dr. David E. Albert, Founder and Chief Medical Officer of AliveCor, explained the vision behind the innovation:

“AliveCor’s Kardia 12L ECG System was born from our mission to revolutionize traditional ECG screening using AI. Clinical evidence shows that our AI, paired with the reduced leadset, delivers results comparable to gold-standard ECGs usually available only in hospitals, thereby democratizing access to life-saving heart data.”

Global Acceptance and Indian Rollout

First launched in the U.S., the Kardia 12L received widespread clinical acceptance, paving the way for its global expansion. The system combines clinical efficiency with portability, enabling clinicians to detect disease quickly while enhancing patient experience.

Anuj Seth, Managing Director of AliveCor India Pvt. Ltd., added:

“The launch of Kardia 12L marks a new era in cardiac diagnostics. In a country facing a rising burden of heart disease, this innovation showcases the future of healthcare—portable, powerful, and built to empower clinicians at the point of care. Our commitment is to deliver medical-grade cardiac diagnostics to every patient in need.”

Compact, Portable, and User-Friendly

As per the press release, weighing only 135 grams, the battery-operated device fits into a physician’s lab coat pocket, making it far more portable than conventional ECG machines. Its streamlined leadset makes the procedure less invasive, as patients do not need to fully disrobe. With minimal training required, physicians can use Kardia 12L more easily than standard 12-lead ECG systems, ensuring faster adoption across clinical settings.
