In a major step towards improving access to affordable organ transplant services, the Andhra Pradesh government has announced a phased plan to transform 12 government teaching hospitals into full-fledged organ transplant centres. Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav unveiled the initiative while addressing a State-level awareness programme organised by Jeevandan at the AU Convention Centre in Visakhapatnam ahead of National Organ Donation Day. The move aims to reduce patients’ dependence on expensive private hospitals and make life-saving transplant procedures accessible to economically weaker sections.
Thousands of Patients Await Organ Transplants
According to the Health Minister, 5,935 patients in Andhra Pradesh are currently waiting for organ transplants. He emphasised that organ transplantation should not remain confined largely to private hospitals, where the high cost of treatment places it beyond the reach of many families. By expanding transplant facilities in government hospitals, the state hopes to improve affordability, accessibility and timely medical care for patients requiring organ transplants.
Phased Expansion of Transplant Services
Under the first phase of the programme, the government plans to expand kidney transplant services at government teaching hospitals in Visakhapatnam, Palasa, Kurnool, Vijayawada, Guntur, Tirupati and Kakinada.
In addition, the government is preparing a long-term roadmap to introduce:
Liver transplant services by 2028
Heart transplant facilities by 2030 in Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and Kurnool
The phased expansion is expected to significantly strengthen the state’s public healthcare infrastructure for organ transplantation.
Investment in Infrastructure and Specialist Care
To support the programme, the government will invest in specialised medical infrastructure and skilled manpower.
The expansion will require:
Recruitment of transplant specialists and super-specialty doctors
Advanced surgical and diagnostic equipment
Dedicated transplant intensive care units (ICUs)
Supporting clinical infrastructure and patient care facilities
These investments are aimed at ensuring that government hospitals can perform complex organ transplant procedures safely and efficiently.
Public Organ Transplant Network Expanding
The Health Minister said Andhra Pradesh had only three organ transplant centres when the present coalition government assumed office. Since then, the number has increased to nine centres, with the next goal being the establishment of transplant facilities across 12 government institutions. The initiative is expected to create a stronger and more accessible public organ transplant network across the state.
Government Proposes Greater Support for Donor Families
Recognising the contribution of organ donors, the government is also considering enhanced support for donor families. At present, Andhra Pradesh provides ₹10,000 towards funeral expenses for organ donors. However, the Health Minister said he has proposed increasing the financial assistance to ₹1 lakh and has submitted the recommendation to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.

By expanding organ transplant services across government hospitals, Andhra Pradesh aims to make advanced healthcare more equitable and accessible.
