In a significant step toward transforming pediatric critical care, Aster CMI Hospital announced the launch of PEARL (Pediatric Emergency and Advanced Response for Liver Care), Karnataka’s first dedicated Pediatric Liver Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The hospital purpose-built this specialized unit to exclusively manage children with severe and life-threatening liver conditions, thereby introducing a new level of focused, timely, and highly specialized care.

The unit was inaugurated by M Maheshwar Rao, Chief Commissioner of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), in the presence of senior leadership and clinical experts from Aster Hospitals.

Shifting Toward a Liver-Centric Care Model

With the launch of PEARL, Aster CMI Hospital moves beyond generalized ICU care and adopts a focused, liver-centric model tailored specifically for children. Pediatric liver emergencies often escalate rapidly and can lead to complications such as brain swelling, infections, organ failure, and metabolic disturbances. Therefore, clinicians must adopt a coordinated, specialist-led approach centered on liver health.

To address these challenges, the unit integrates advanced monitoring systems and brings together a multidisciplinary team of pediatric hepatologists, liver transplant surgeons, intensivists, anesthetists, infectious disease specialists, and specially trained liver ICU nurses. As a result, PEARL enables rapid response, precision-driven care, and continuous monitoring during critical moments.

Enabling Early Intervention and Better Outcomes

Speaking on the launch, Prof. (Dr.) N. Karthik Nagesh, Program Director – Pediatric Centre of Excellence, emphasized that time plays a crucial role in pediatric liver emergencies. He explained that PEARL allows clinicians to initiate early, targeted interventions while delivering continuous, liver-focused critical care tailored for children. Consequently, this approach significantly improves clinical outcomes and, in certain cases, even supports recovery without the need for liver transplantation.

Strengthening Liver Care and Transplant Capabilities

Adding further perspective, Dr. Sonal Asthana, Program Director, Hepatobiliary Surgery and Multiorgan Transplantation, highlighted the scale and impact of Aster’s liver care services. He noted that the Aster Integrated Liver Care Team is Karnataka’s largest liver care and transplant provider, treating more than 7,000 patients annually. Moreover, the team performs over 100 liver transplants in Bengaluru each year, including a significant number for pediatric liver failure.

Importantly, the hospital also extends life-saving transplants to children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds through an innovative and affordable transplant program. Therefore, the launch of a dedicated Pediatric Liver ICU further reinforces Aster’s commitment to delivering world-class, interdisciplinary care to critically ill children.

Redefining Pediatric Healthcare Standards

As per the press release, Dr. Prashanth N, CEO – Aster Hospitals, Karnataka, stated that the launch of PEARL reflects the organization’s commitment to redefining pediatric critical care. By establishing a dedicated liver ICU supported by expert multidisciplinary teams, the hospital strengthens its ability to deliver timely, specialized, and comprehensive care while setting new benchmarks in pediatric healthcare.

A Patient-Centered and Specialized Approach

Unlike conventional ICUs, PEARL is entirely structured around the unique needs of children with liver failure. Every aspect of care—from monitoring and medication to intervention protocols—aligns precisely with pediatric liver requirements. Consequently, this focused design enables early detection, faster intervention, and improved recovery outcomes, potentially reducing the need for transplantation in some cases.

In addition, the unit emphasizes family-centered care by ensuring clear communication, emotional support, and continuous guidance for families during critical situations.

Transforming the Pediatric Care Landscape

Overall, with the launch of PEARL, Aster Hospitals is reshaping the pediatric healthcare landscape. By integrating clinical expertise, advanced technology, and compassionate care, the hospital introduces a dedicated and highly specialized liver care ecosystem aimed at improving outcomes for children across the region.
