Dr. Nomal Chandra Borah, Founder of the GNRC Universal Health Mission and the GNRC Group of Hospitals, has been conferred with two distinguished national honours—the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Indian Academy of Neurology (IAN) and the Lifetime Achievement Award 2025 by the Association of Nurse Executive (India) [ANEI]. These awards recognise his transformative contributions to healthcare, neurology, nursing leadership, and community development spanning over five decades.
Recognition by the Indian Academy of Neurology
As per the press release, the Indian Academy of Neurology (IAN), the apex national body of neurologists in India, works to advance neurological science, research, education, and clinical excellence across the country. Its Lifetime Achievement Award honours neurologists who have made exceptional and enduring contributions to the field.
In its citation, IAN praised Dr. Borah’s “awe-inspiring life story of grit, determination, and service.” The academy highlighted how he rose from humble beginnings to become one of India’s most respected neurologists. Moreover, it acknowledged his unwavering integrity, self-belief, and perseverance in establishing Northeast India’s first comprehensive neuroscience centre. Through these efforts, Dr. Borah significantly expanded neurological services to previously unreached populations and pioneered DNB Neurology training in the region.
Additionally, IAN commended his extensive research work, prolific publications, and his influential role as a mentor and social entrepreneur. The academy described his journey as “monumental for the State and the Nation, and an inspiration for the younger generation to emulate.”
Honour from the Association of Nurse Executive (India)
Meanwhile, the Association of Nurse Executive (India), the country’s premier professional body representing senior nursing leaders, educators, and administrators, also honoured Dr. Borah with its Lifetime Achievement Award 2025. ANEI plays a vital role in strengthening nursing governance, promoting professional excellence, and shaping policies that uplift India’s nursing workforce.
Considered one of the highest honours in Indian nursing leadership, the ANEI Lifetime Achievement Award recognises individuals whose vision and lifelong service have profoundly influenced nursing practice and healthcare delivery nationwide.
In its citation, ANEI hailed Dr. Borah as a “visionary neurologist and dedicated social reformer.” The association highlighted his pioneering initiatives—such as GNRC Medireach, Swasthyamitra, and the Universal Health Mission—which have successfully expanded preventive, ethical, and affordable healthcare to rural and underserved communities. Furthermore, ANEI acknowledged his pivotal role in establishing the Asian Institute of Nursing Education in 2004, which has since emerged as a respected centre for nursing education and leadership in India.
A Legacy Rooted in Service and Equity
Together, these two national honours underscore Dr. Borah’s rare and far-reaching impact across clinical medicine, nursing leadership, education, and social development. His work has not only transformed neurological care in Northeast India but has also strengthened healthcare systems and human resources at a national level.

Responding to the recognitions, Dr. Borah expressed heartfelt gratitude and said, “These honours belong to my patients and their family members, colleagues, mentors, students, and the entire GNRC family.
