Experts are raising concern over the alarming increase in spine health issues among women after pregnancy and young adults. Once seen primarily as an age-related problem, back pain is now affecting people as early as their mid-20s. Sedentary lifestyles, prolonged screen time, and poor posture habits are placing the spine under constant strain, resulting in both short-term discomfort and long-term complications. However, timely diagnosis and management can help individuals remain pain-free and continue their daily activities with ease.

Motherhood and Spine Health: An Overlooked Concern

Motherhood brings immense joy, but it also introduces physical challenges that are often underestimated. According to Dr. Vishwanathan Iyer, Neurosurgeon, Zynova Shalby Hospital, Mumbai, many new mothers suffer from significant back pain, posture issues, and spinal discomfort due to physiological changes during and after pregnancy.

He explained, “During pregnancy, weight gain, hormonal shifts, and altered posture put additional stress on the spine. After delivery, daily tasks such as lifting the baby, prolonged breastfeeding, and inadequate rest can worsen the pain, sometimes leading to lumbar strain, disc problems, or chronic lower back pain. Shockingly, there has been a 60% spike in spine problems among new mothers. Every month, 6 out of 10 women aged 25–35 report post-pregnancy back pain that interferes with their routine.”

Preventive Care and Early Intervention Key for Mothers

Dr. Iyer emphasized that posture correction, strengthening exercises, and physiotherapy play a vital role in recovery. He advised mothers to avoid bending forward repeatedly, use supportive chairs during feeding, and practice gentle stretches daily.

“Preventive measures such as maintaining a healthy weight, taking short breaks during childcare, and getting adequate rest are crucial to protect spinal health,” Dr. Iyer added. “Back pain should never be dismissed as ‘normal after pregnancy.’ Early medical consultation helps mothers regain mobility, confidence, and a pain-free quality of life.”

Early-Onset Spine Problems Among Adults on the Rise

Spine health concerns are no longer limited to older adults. Dr. Siddharth Katkade, Spine Surgeon, Apollo Spectra Hospital, Mumbai, noted a growing number of patients between 25 and 45 years suffering from back and neck pain caused by poor posture and inactivity.

“Prolonged sitting, weak core muscles, and the constant use of digital devices are leading to early-onset back pain,” said Dr. Katkade. “Continuous use of mobile phones, laptops, and tablets causes ‘tech neck’ and slouched posture, increasing the risk of spine disorders. Additionally, inadequate calcium and vitamin D intake weakens bones, making them more prone to deformities. There is a 60% rise in spine-related problems among young adults. Out of every 10 adults under 45 I see monthly, 6 report stiffness, reduced flexibility, or numbness in the neck and limbs due to prolonged gadget use and sedentary habits.”

Lifestyle Changes Can Prevent Long-Term Damage

Dr. Katkade warned that neglecting early symptoms could lead to chronic pain, reduced mobility, nerve compression, slipped discs, and even long-term disability. “Spinal deformities such as neck humps or hunchbacks are becoming more common,” he said.

As per the press release, he recommended that adults maintain an active lifestyle with regular exercise and stretching. “Follow proper sitting and standing postures, limit screen exposure, and take short breaks every 30–40 minutes. Ensure adequate nutrition with sufficient calcium and vitamin D for strong bones. Regular spine check-ups are essential to detect early postural changes and prevent irreversible damage.”

A Call for Awareness and Proactive Care

Medical experts agree that spine health should be treated as a lifelong priority rather than a reactive concern. By incorporating early intervention, posture awareness, and consistent physical activity, individuals—whether new mothers or young professionals—can protect their spinal health, improve mobility, and ensure a pain-free, productive life.
