New Technology to Advance Precision Cancer Care in India
Fortis Healthcare, part of the IHH Healthcare group, has announced plans to install the MEVION S250-FIT™ Proton Therapy System™ at Fortis Memorial Research Institute (FMRI), Gurugram. The system will feature Leo Cancer Care’s Marie® upright positioning technology and RayStation® treatment planning software from RaySearch Laboratories.
Subject to regulatory approvals and site preparations, the installation will make Fortis the first healthcare provider in India to introduce upright proton therapy and the first Leo Cancer Care system in the country.
Precision and Patient-Centric Treatment
Proton therapy can target tumours precisely while reducing radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissues. This approach can benefit selected adult and paediatric cancers, particularly tumours located near sensitive organs such as the brain, spinal cord, heart and lungs.
As per the press release issued by Fortis Healthcare, the system combines a compact proton accelerator with a fixed-beam delivery system, upright positioning and integrated CT imaging. This configuration can also improve comfort for patients who find it difficult to lie flat.
Strengthening Advanced Cancer Care
The compact system can fit within FMRI’s existing infrastructure, reducing the space and construction requirements typically associated with proton therapy. Moreover, its installation will further strengthen the Fortis Cancer Institute’s comprehensive oncology and precision-care capabilities.
Dr Ashutosh Raghuvanshi, Managing Director & CEO, Fortis Healthcare, said the initiative will help strengthen India’s precision-oncology capabilities and expand access to advanced cancer treatment.
The installation remains subject to applicable regulatory approvals and necessary site preparations.
