The Delhi government-run Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital in Dilshad Garden is set to establish a state-of-the-art super speciality trauma block. Officials confirmed that the facility will include nine major operation theatres, 80 intensive care unit (ICU) beds, and integrated emergency and critical care services.

One-Stop Centre for Comprehensive Trauma Care

Designed as a “one-stop trauma services centre,” the new block will bring emergency, OPD, and support services under one roof. As a result, departments such as neurosurgery, orthopaedics, burns and plastic surgery, and cardiothoracic and vascular surgery will function within the same complex. This integrated approach will significantly streamline trauma response and improve coordination among specialties.

Advanced Infrastructure to Enhance Patient Care

Moreover, hospital authorities emphasised that the facility will be equipped with advanced medical infrastructure. Dr. Praveen Kumar, Additional Medical Superintendent at GTB Hospital, stated that the centre will deliver emergency trauma care along with clinical and non-clinical services through a multi-specialty approach. He further added that all trauma-related specialties—including orthopaedics, neurology, cardiovascular care, and burns and plastic surgery—will operate within this dedicated block.

Large-Scale Project with Significant Capacity

As reported by Hindustan Times, the project, estimated at ₹244.87 crore, will be developed as a ground-plus-six structure with a basement, covering nearly 19,900 square metres. In addition, the facility will house 206 beds, including 80 ICU beds, along with 44 non-census beds for observation and perioperative care. It will also provide parking space for 199 vehicles, thereby improving accessibility for patients and caregivers.

Execution Timeline and Financial Support

Furthermore, Hospital Services Consultancy Corporation Limited (HSCC), the Centre’s designated agency, is executing the project. Officials expect completion within approximately 15 months. The central government will contribute around ₹120 crore towards the project, while the detailed project report (DPR) and draft memorandum of understanding have already been submitted for approval.

Budget Announcement and Expanded Funding Scope

Earlier, during the Delhi budget announcement, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also highlighted the project, estimating central assistance at around ₹200 crore. This reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening trauma care infrastructure in the capital.

Reducing Burden on Existing Trauma Centres

Importantly, the upcoming facility is expected to ease the pressure on major trauma centres such as AIIMS Delhi and Safdarjung Hospital. By consolidating emergency and specialised services in one location, GTB Hospital aims to improve patient flow and reduce overcrowding at these institutions.

Towards Integrated and Efficient Emergency Care

Overall, officials noted that this will be the first Delhi government hospital to offer fully integrated emergency and specialised trauma care under one roof. Consequently, the initiative marks a significant step towards delivering faster, more efficient, and patient-centred trauma services in the city.
