
HealthCare Global Enterprises (HCG) has begun treating cancer patients using Karnataka’s first Elekta Unity MR-Linac, making MR-guided adaptive radiation therapy available in the state. The technology brings one of the most advanced forms of radiation treatment to patients across Karnataka and neighbouring regions.
Real-Time Imaging Improves Treatment Precision
The Elekta Unity combines a 1.5 Tesla MRI scanner with a linear accelerator, enabling clinicians to visualise tumours and surrounding anatomy in real time. Consequently, doctors can modify the treatment plan during each session to match anatomical changes, delivering highly precise radiation while protecting healthy tissue.
India’s growing cancer burden underscores the need for advanced treatment options. According to the Global Cancer Observatory (GLOBOCAN), new cancer cases in the country are expected to reach 2.08 million by 2040, a 57.5% increase from 2020. As per the press release, MR-guided adaptive radiation therapy offers more personalised treatment by adapting radiation delivery to a patient’s anatomy each day.

Dr. B.S. Ajaikumar, Founder and Chairman of HCG, said the Unity MR-Linac marks another milestone in precision medicine by enabling highly targeted radiation with minimal exposure to healthy tissue, helping improve outcomes while reducing side effects.
