IIT Madras and IRFC Launch India’s First Single Cell Omics Translational Research Laboratory

IIT Madras has partnered with the Indian Railways Finance Corporation (IRFC), a Navratna PSU, to establish the country’s first Single Cell Omics Translational (SCOT) Research Laboratory. The advanced research facility was inaugurated on campus on 17 November 2025, marking a significant milestone in India’s precision healthcare and biomedical innovation landscape.

A Major Step Toward Precision Healthcare

The SCOT Lab aims to bridge engineering and medicine to strengthen India’s precision healthcare ecosystem. Equipped with cutting-edge instrumentation, the facility will support early diagnosis, disease prognosis, biomarker discovery, and drug screening across a wide range of conditions including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, infectious diseases, metabolic disorders, inflammatory diseases, and other major non-communicable diseases.

CSR Support from IRFC

IRFC has extended a CSR grant of ₹10.83 crore to establish the laboratory in the Department of Medical Sciences and Technology (DMST) at IIT Madras. This investment will accelerate research in single-cell biology, drug discovery, and translational healthcare, enabling the development of next-generation therapeutics and diagnostics.

Leaders Highlight National Importance

The inauguration event brought together key leaders including Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras; Ms. Usha Venugopal, Member (Finance), Ministry of Railways; Mr. Manoj Kumar Dubey, Chairman and Managing Director, IRFC; and senior faculty from IIT Madras.

Prof. Kamakoti emphasized that the collaboration represents a major milestone in strengthening India’s capabilities in precision medicine and drug discovery. He noted that integrating engineering with medical sciences will help India develop targeted therapeutics. It will also support early diagnostic tools and innovative healthcare solutions.

Ms. Usha Venugopal highlighted the importance of building national capacity in medical research. She stated that IRFC’s CSR contribution will support studies with the potential to significantly improve diagnostics and therapeutic development. She also underscored the role of collaborations in advancing national health goals.

Advancing India’s Research Capabilities

Prof. Anubama Rajan, who is leading the project at the DMST, expressed that India urgently needs research platforms capable of linking molecular data to clinical outcomes. She added that the SCOT Lab will enable high-resolution disease analysis, accelerate drug discovery, and support precision-medicine strategies tailored to Indian populations. The facility will also serve as a national training hub for clinicians, scientists, and engineers.

Strengthening Healthcare Innovation Through CSR

Mr. Manoj Kumar Dubey of IRFC reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting innovation in healthcare. He stated that the CSR contribution of ₹10 crore reflects IRFC’s dedication to scientific breakthroughs. It will support advancements in diagnostics, drug development, and precision medicine.

The SCOT Research Laboratory is expected to deliver several high-impact outcomes:

  • Serving as a national hub for clinicians, engineers, and scientists, and building India’s skilled workforce in advanced cell analytics and computational biology.

As per the IIT Madras press release, the collaboration between IIT Madras and IRFC positions India at the forefront of cellular-level research. It also advances precision healthcare and enables breakthrough innovations in diagnosis, treatment, and biomedical science.
