50-year-old patient recovers without neurological deficit and is discharged on the third day after surgery
Neurosurgeons at Apex Superspeciality Hospital, Borivali, successfully removed a large, highly vascular brain tumour from a 50-year-old man in approximately one hour. The patient recovered without any neurological deficit and was discharged on the third day after surgery.
A Complex Surgical Challenge
The patient presented with persistent headaches, disorientation and vision-related problems. An MRI scan revealed a large tumour in the left parieto-occipital region, attached to the dura, the protective covering of the brain.
However, the tumour’s highly vascular nature made the surgery particularly challenging because of the risk of significant blood loss and potential injury to surrounding critical brain structures.
Complete Removal in Approximately One Hour
Dr. Samir Nitin Parekh, a specialist in brain and spine-related surgical and non-surgical procedures, performed the surgery. Through meticulous pre-operative planning and precise microsurgical techniques, he successfully removed the entire tumour within approximately one hour.
According to the press release, careful dissection and control of the tumour’s blood supply helped the surgical team achieve complete removal while protecting the surrounding brain tissue.
Rapid Recovery Without Neurological Deficit
Following the procedure, doctors extubated the patient on the operating table and found no neurological deficit. His post-operative recovery remained stable, allowing him to mobilise quickly and progress through recovery. Consequently, he was discharged on the third day after surgery.
Speaking about the case, Dr. Samir Nitin Parekh said, “Tumours located in the parieto-occipital region can present unique surgical challenges, particularly when they are large and highly vascular. Careful surgical planning, precise dissection and control of the tumour’s blood supply are critical for achieving complete removal while protecting the surrounding brain. In this patient, we were able to achieve complete tumour removal within an hour, with no neurological deficit, which is a very encouraging outcome.”
Do Not Ignore Persistent Symptoms
The successful outcome highlights the importance of early evaluation of persistent headaches, blurred vision and unexplained disorientation, as these symptoms can sometimes indicate underlying neurological conditions.
Dr. Parekh urged people not to neglect persistent symptoms. He advised individuals experiencing ongoing headaches, particularly when accompanied by blurred vision or disorientation, to seek timely medical evaluation.
The case demonstrates the role of advanced neurosurgical expertise and timely intervention in managing complex brain tumours while supporting rapid recovery and preserving neurological function.
