India’s Young Researcher Sets Benchmark in Sustainable Biomedical Innovation

Showcasing the transformative impact of early research exposure, Ms. Likhila B. K., a Grade 11 student from St. Francis School, Bengaluru, achieved a rare distinction by winning two top awards at the First Academia–Industry Conclave 2025, organised by the Centre for Nano and Material Sciences (CNMS), Jain University. Her project was part of Anveshana 2025, Prayoga’s flagship national student research program, conducted under the mentorship of Dr. Ramya Prabhu (Principal Investigator) and Mr. Nagarjuna M. (Co-PI).

Anveshana: Shaping Future Innovators

Anveshana stands out as India’s first free and fully funded scientific research program for high school students (Grades 9–12). Designed to nurture young scientific talent, it provides students with opportunities to conduct original research under expert guidance. The program also offers access to advanced laboratories and fieldwork, encouraging participants from diverse backgrounds to explore scientific inquiry. Moreover, as part of Prayoga’s broader education research initiative, Anveshana studies how hands-on research fosters scientific curiosity, critical thinking, and innovation among young learners.

Award-Winning Project on Biodegradable Piezoelectric Devices

Competing against doctoral and post-doctoral researchers from across India, Likhila earned both the Best Poster Award and Best Idea Pitch Award for her innovative project titled “Development of Poly-L-Lactic Acid–Metal Oxide Polymer Composites for Biodegradable Piezoelectric Devices.” Her research focused on creating eco-friendly piezoelectric materials—substances that generate electricity when pressed or stretched, widely used in healthcare devices. Since conventional implants use non-biodegradable materials, her team explored a biodegradable alternative using Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA) combined with metal oxides. After rigorous testing, they discovered a composite that displayed excellent piezoelectric performance, opening the door to safer and sustainable implants for bone and tissue regeneration.

A Student’s Journey of Discovery

As per the press release, reflecting on her experience, Likhila shared, “The time I spent at Anveshana was the most enriching five months of my life. I learnt more about science than ever before, while also building lasting connections. My mentors encouraged me to ask questions, design experiments, and think independently. Presenting my work to industry experts and research scholars was a defining moment where I felt I truly belonged in the world of science. I am deeply grateful to Prayoga for this opportunity.”

Inspiring a New Generation of Scientists

Likhila’s success highlights the transformative potential of structured research programs for young learners. Since its inception in 2021, Prayoga’s Anveshana has mentored 114 students across 37 projects, resulting in 11 publications in leading international journals and numerous recognitions at national forums. The initiative continues to build skills, confidence, and curiosity among high schoolers—paving the way for India’s next generation of scientific innovators.
