As India grapples with a fresh wave of COVID-19 infections—crossing the 7,000 active case mark according to the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare—citizens are turning to digital platforms for answers. Justdial, the country’s leading local search engine, has reported a dramatic surge in COVID-related searches, highlighting a nationwide shift in public behaviour driven by renewed health concerns.
Nationwide COVID Searches Surge by 153%
Between April and May 2025, Justdial recorded a 153% increase in COVID-related searches across India. This spike reflects growing public awareness and a proactive response to the virus’s resurgence. Citizens are urgently searching for testing centres, insurance plans, and vaccination sites, signalling rising anxiety over both health and financial preparedness.
Searches for government testing centres surged eightfold, matching the spike in queries for private testing centres. Additionally, insurance-related searches jumped by 77%, while queries for Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) vaccination centres tripled, underscoring the public’s renewed interest in preventive care.
Delhi Leads in Search Activity
The capital city, Delhi, emerged as the epicentre of digital COVID awareness, reporting a 140% rise in overall COVID-related queries. Government testing centre searches skyrocketed—16 times higher than April levels—while searches for private testing centres jumped tenfold. Insurance-related queries also rose by 30%, reflecting both health and financial preparedness.
Kerala Shows Sharpest Increase in Insurance Interest
Kerala displayed the most dramatic regional response, with overall COVID searches tripling since April. The state saw an 84% spike in insurance-related searches, the highest in the country. Notably, searches for private testing centres rose 18 times, pointing to heightened local vigilance.
Mumbai and Tamil Nadu Respond Cautiously but Firmly
In Mumbai, COVID-related searches surged by 94%, with a 26% increase in insurance queries, suggesting a focus on risk coverage over testing. Tamil Nadu saw a 72% rise in overall searches, with a 30% uptick in insurance searches and a fivefold increase in private testing centre queries, revealing growing preparedness among the state’s residents.
Citizens Proactively Prepare for Health Uncertainty
The rising search volumes reveal more than curiosity—they demonstrate active citizen engagement in safeguarding health. From seeking testing centres to researching insurance and vaccination options, Indians are preparing for the potential escalation of COVID cases. “These search trends highlight how seriously the public is taking the situation,” a Justdial spokesperson noted. “People are responding with caution, awareness, and preparation.”
A Digital Mirror of a Nation on Alert
As COVID-related queries continue to rise across all major Indian cities and states, it’s clear that the country is responding not with panic, but with informed vigilance. The shift in search behaviour illustrates a population determined to stay ahead of the curve—seeking information, planning finances, and protecting families. As per the press release, this proactive digital response could play a pivotal role in containing the virus’s spread and ensuring that healthcare systems and citizens are better equipped for what lies ahead.
