To combat infant mortality caused by diarrhoea, the Rajasthan government will launch a focused ‘Stop Diarrhoea’ campaign from July 1 to August 15. The health department has issued detailed guidelines and instructions to ensure smooth implementation of the initiative.

Diarrhoea Remains a Key Concern but Shows Decline

Health department officials revealed that diarrhoea still contributes to 4.1% of deaths among children under four. However, this number is steadily declining. According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), the prevalence of diarrhoea in the state has dropped to 6.1%, down from 7.4% reported in NFHS-4.

Improved Public Health Measures Driving Progress

Officials attribute this progress to improved access to clean drinking water, better sanitation, increased rotavirus vaccination coverage, and reduced open defecation. These measures have significantly lowered both the prevalence and fatality of diarrhoea among infants.

Doorstep Delivery of ORS and Zinc Tablets

As part of the campaign, the health department will distribute two packets of Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) and zinc tablets to every household with infants. ASHA workers will carry out the distribution while educating families on proper usage.

Early Intervention and Parental Awareness Key to Prevention

As reported by TOI, healthcare workers will advise parents to begin administering ORS and zinc as soon as diarrhoea symptoms appear and to seek medical attention without delay.

Public Health Education to Strengthen Impact

Dr. Ravi Prakash Sharma, Director of Public Health, stated that the campaign will combine medicine distribution with community education. ASHA workers will play a critical role in informing families about the benefits and correct use of ORS and zinc to prevent dehydration and complications.

A Step Towards Healthier Childhoods

Through this campaign, the state aims to reduce preventable child deaths. It also seeks to empower parents with the tools and knowledge to manage diarrhoeal illnesses effectively.
