Kauvery Heart City has successfully performed the Delta region’s first renal denervation therapy, marking a major advancement in the treatment of resistant hypertension. Resistant hypertension refers to a condition in which blood pressure remains persistently high despite the use of multiple medications at optimal doses. Notably, only around 100 patients across the country have undergone this advanced therapy so far.
Patient Suffered From Multiple Health Conditions
The patient, a 55-year-old woman, had been living with hypertension, diabetes, and obstructive sleep apnea — a condition in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep because of upper airway blockage. Although she strictly followed her prescribed treatment plan, her blood pressure remained dangerously uncontrolled and led to repeated hospital admissions.
Advanced Minimally Invasive Procedure Performed Successfully
After conducting a detailed medical evaluation, doctors decided to proceed with renal denervation therapy. The minimally invasive procedure involves delivering radiofrequency (RF) energy through a catheter inserted into the renal arteries, which supply blood to the kidneys.
As per the press release, the RF energy selectively disrupts the overactive nerves lining these arteries, thereby reducing the nerve signals responsible for elevated blood pressure. Consequently, the treatment helps bring blood pressure under better control over time.
Expert Team Led the Intervention
Dr. T. Joseph, Interventional Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist, successfully carried out the procedure along with his team at Kauvery Heart City. Following the intervention, the patient showed significant improvement, and her blood pressure is now under better control.
Speaking about the achievement, Dr. Joseph said, “We are happy to have introduced renal denervation to the Delta region. Renal denervation represents a significant advancement in the management of difficult-to-treat hypertension and marks an important step forward in expanding access to cutting-edge cardiovascular care in the region.”
Resistant Hypertension Can Lead to Serious Complications
Dr. Joseph further explained that resistant hypertension can develop because of several factors, including overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system, hormonal imbalances, kidney-related mechanisms, and associated conditions such as diabetes and sleep apnea.
He added that conventional medications alone may not always be sufficient in such cases. If left untreated, resistant hypertension can result in severe complications, including stroke, heart attack, heart failure, kidney damage, and vision loss. Therefore, timely intervention played a crucial role in preventing further deterioration and repeated medical emergencies in this patient.
Kauvery Heart City Expands Access to Advanced Cardiac Care
Dr. T. Senthil Kumar, Senior Cardio-Thoracic Surgeon and Executive Director of Kauvery Heart City, highlighted the significance of the milestone.
“This novel therapy has already benefitted close to 100 patients across the country, and we are proud to introduce it in Trichy for the first time. Kauvery Heart City has consistently remained at the forefront of bringing advanced medical technologies to the region, and this achievement reflects our continued commitment to delivering world-class care,” he said.
