A colostomy is a temporary surgical procedure commonly performed in children born with certain congenital conditions or those affected by intestinal cancer, severe infections, or other bowel-related disorders. In this procedure, surgeons temporarily divert the normal passage of stool by bringing the end of the large intestine out through the abdominal wall. Stool then passes into a disposable colostomy bag attached to this opening. With regular cleaning and timely bag changes, children can maintain good hygiene and continue daily activities.
Emotional and Social Challenges for Families
Although colostomy plays a critical role in healing, families often experience fear, confusion, and social stigma after the procedure. Parents may struggle with unanswered questions, emotional stress, and uncertainty about caring for their child. Recognizing these challenges, KIMS Cuddles Hospital, Secunderabad, launched a Pediatric Colostomy Support Group on Monday, marking National Pediatric Surgery Day.
A First-of-Its-Kind Support Initiative
As per the press release, the Pediatric Colostomy Support Group operates under the guidance of pediatric surgery specialists and is led by Dr. M. Yoga Nagendhar, Chief Consultant Pediatric Surgeon, Pediatric Urologist, and Robotic Surgeon at KIMS Cuddles Hospital. Through this initiative, the hospital aims to create awareness about colostomy, share scientific and practical knowledge, and provide structured emotional and medical support to parents of children who have undergone the procedure. Notably, Dr. Yoga Nagendhar highlighted that KIMS Cuddles Hospital has launched India’s first dedicated pediatric colostomy support group.
Why Colostomy Is Performed in Children
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. M. Yoga Nagendhar emphasized that colostomy is usually a temporary measure designed to allow the body to heal. “During the procedure, a portion of the large intestine is brought to the surface of the abdomen, creating an opening through which bowel movements pass into a colostomy bag. In children, this diversion allows the intestines to recover after surgery,” he explained.
He further noted that doctors perform colostomies for several medical reasons, including congenital absence or improper formation of the anus, Hirschsprung’s disease, newborn intestinal conditions such as necrotizing enterocolitis, intestinal injuries from accidents, severe infections, bowel obstruction, and certain cancers.
Supporting Parents Through Education and Guidance
Highlighting the role of family support, Dr. Babu S. Madarkar, Clinical Director and Chief Neonatologist at KIMS Cuddles Secunderabad, explained that parents often feel overwhelmed while managing a colostomy at home. Frequent bag changes, preventing skin irritation, making dietary modifications, and recognizing warning signs that require medical attention can be challenging. Moreover, due to limited awareness, colostomy may also become a social concern for families.
Building Confidence Through Community and Care
To address these issues, the Pediatric Colostomy Support Group at KIMS Cuddles Hospital will offer hands-on training, counseling, and continuous guidance to families. The initiative will educate parents on proper colostomy bag management, stoma hygiene, nutrition, and early identification of complications. In addition, the group will connect families facing similar experiences, allowing them to share concerns, exchange practical tips, and support one another.
“By providing expert guidance from surgeons and specialized nurses, this initiative will help families overcome isolation, build confidence, and better understand surgical timelines and expected outcomes,” Dr. Madarkar said.
