Young Mother Develops Severe Complications After Hysterectomy
A 25-year-old woman from Bethamcherla underwent a hysterectomy to treat uterine fibroids that had caused heavy menstrual bleeding. Since she was already married with two children, her family agreed to the surgery. However, soon after the procedure, she began to suffer from continuous urine leakage. The condition caused her intense physical discomfort, emotional distress, and social isolation. Unable to go out due to the foul odor and embarrassment, she gradually lost confidence.

Seeking Help at KIMS Hospital, Kurnool
After two months of suffering, the woman approached the Urology Department at KIMS Hospital, Kurnool. There, Dr. Y. Manoj Kumar, Head of Urology, led a complex surgical procedure that completely cured her condition.

Diagnosis Reveals Multiple Vesicovaginal Fistulas
Explaining the case, Dr. Manoj Kumar said, “The 25-year-old woman from Bethamcherla, Nandyal district, came to us after developing urine leakage following hysterectomy. Diagnostic tests, including CT cystography, revealed three vesicovaginal fistulas—abnormal connections between the urinary bladder and vagina. These had formed due to complications from her earlier surgery, leading to constant urine leakage.”

He further noted that such conditions deeply impact a woman’s quality of life, often causing loss of confidence and social withdrawal.

A Challenging and Precise Surgical Repair
The case was particularly complex because one of the fistulas was located very close to the urethra, requiring meticulous surgical precision. Dr. Manoj Kumar explained that it is essential to wait at least three months after the initial surgery to allow tissues to heal before attempting fistula repair. Since the patient came in two months post-hysterectomy, the team advised her to wait another month before surgery.

Successful Reconstruction Restores Health and Confidence
As per the press release, during the procedure, surgeons carefully separated the bladder and vaginal walls, cleaned and repaired the damaged tissues, and reconstructed the area using fresh tissue layers. All three fistulas were successfully closed with precision and care.

Following the surgery, the patient recovered well. Once all catheters and tubes were removed, she was discharged in good health. She now experiences no urinary leakage and has regained her confidence, leading a normal, happy life again.

Hope and Healing for Women with Vesicovaginal Fistula
“Vesicovaginal fistula is a condition that severely affects women’s quality of life—physically, emotionally, and socially. Yet, if diagnosed early and treated properly, it can be completely cured,” said Dr. Y. Manoj Kumar. “Seeing this patient return to normal life brought immense satisfaction to our entire team.”
