KIMS Hospitals Restores Six-Year-Old’s Vision Function After Complex Eyelid Surgery

Rare Eye Injury Repaired with Microsurgery

Doctors at KIMS Hospitals, Kurnool, successfully restored the eyelid anatomy and tear drainage function of a six-year-old girl after performing a complex three-hour microsurgical reconstruction following a severe eye injury.

Child Suffers Severe Eyelid Damage

The child, Divisha, sustained a deep injury around her right eye after accidentally falling onto a gate while playing at home. Doctors found extensive cuts on both eyelids and a complete tear of the lower canaliculus, a tiny channel that drains tears.

Timely Surgery Ensures Full Recovery

As per the press release, the surgical team performed emergency microsurgery using specialised instruments and loupe magnification. They reconstructed the damaged tear drainage channel with an Intracath stent and repaired the eyelid using fine microsurgical sutures. The nearly three-hour procedure restored both the eye’s function and appearance.

Dr. Navya Kothacheruvu, Consultant Plastic Surgeon at KIMS Hospitals, said pediatric canalicular injuries are rare and technically challenging because of the small size of the tear drainage system. However, timely intervention helped achieve an excellent functional and cosmetic outcome.

Doctors Urge Parents to Seek Immediate Care

The child recovered without complications and was discharged in stable condition with normal eyelid anatomy and tear drainage restored. Doctors advised parents to seek immediate medical attention for injuries near the inner corner of the eyelid, as early diagnosis and microsurgical treatment can prevent lifelong complications.
