Neurosurgeons at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London have successfully performed what is being described as the world’s first AI-assisted live operation to remove a brain tumour. The surgery helped protect the sight of a 48-year-old patient, Rhys Hibbert.
AI Supports Surgeons in Real Time
The patient underwent surgery in May to remove an 11mm tumour located on the pituitary gland, close to critical structures such as the optic nerves. During the procedure, the AI system analysed live surgical footage and helped identify nerves and blood vessels in real time.
As per the report, the technology acted as an additional source of guidance for the surgical team, while the surgeon remained in full control of the operation. The AI system had been trained using hundreds of surgical videos and colour-coded critical anatomical structures to help surgeons avoid potential complications, including vision loss and stroke.
Patient Recovers Vision After Surgery
The operation successfully removed the tumour and protected the patient’s vision. Following surgery, Hibbert reported a significant improvement in his sight and was able to return to work within weeks.
The technology was developed by researchers at University College London and was funded through the National Institute for Health and Care Research. The development marks an important step towards the use of real-time AI support in complex neurosurgical procedures.
