Dr. Nabeel Nazeer, Advanced Laparoscopic and Robotic GI Surgeon, and his team at Dr. Mehta’s Hospitals, Velappanchavadi, successfully performed emergency laparoscopic surgery on a 54-year-old Chennai resident with severe small bowel obstruction, sepsis and impending bowel strangulation.
The patient had previously consulted multiple centres but did not undergo definitive surgery because of the complexity of his condition and high operative risk. He also had a history of cerebrovascular accident (CVA) and was taking antiplatelet medication, which he had taken on the day of presentation.
Surgery Despite High Operative Risk
However, the worsening obstruction, sepsis and risk of bowel strangulation made immediate surgery necessary. Delaying the procedure could have led to bowel ischemia, perforation and other life-threatening complications.
After rapid assessment, resuscitation and investigations, the surgical team proceeded with emergency intervention. Although open surgery was a consideration given the patient’s condition, Dr. Nazeer, Deputy Head, Department of Minimal Access & General Surgery, opted for a minimally invasive laparoscopic approach.
Successful Recovery
The surgery was performed on July 7, 2026, and the team completed the procedure laparoscopically without converting to open surgery. The bowel was carefully assessed and managed, while the minimally invasive approach helped reduce surgical trauma.
As per the press release, the patient recovered uneventfully and was discharged in stable condition on the second postoperative day. At follow-up, he reported no complications and had made a complete recovery.

The case highlights how timely intervention and advanced laparoscopic expertise can support minimally invasive treatment in selected high-risk surgical emergencies, particularly when delaying surgery may increase the risk of life-threatening complications.
