In a major stride toward strengthening neurological emergency care in the region, Medicover Hospital, Navi Mumbai, has inaugurated a comprehensive 24×7 stroke unit dedicated to delivering rapid and specialized treatment for stroke emergencies. Emphasizing the principle that “time is brain,” the hospital has equipped the unit with immediate CT/MRI imaging, thrombolysis and thrombectomy capabilities, neuro-ICU support, and a trained multidisciplinary stroke team available round the clock. This initiative aims to significantly improve outcomes for stroke patients across Navi Mumbai, Panvel, and nearby areas.

Police Official Highlights Importance of Timely Action

Shri Sanjay Yenpure, IPS and Joint Commissioner of Police for Navi Mumbai, who served as the Chief Guest at the launch event, underscored the critical importance of swift medical intervention in stroke management. His remarks reinforced the urgent need for public awareness and early response to stroke symptoms.

Understanding Stroke and Its Warning Signs

A stroke happens when something disrupts the brain’s blood supply. This can occur either due to a blockage (ischemic stroke) or a burst blood vessel (hemorrhagic stroke). Common risk factors include uncontrolled hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, obesity, heart disease, and a sedentary lifestyle.

According to Dr. Pawan Ojha, Consultant Neurologist and Director of Neurosciences (Maharashtra) at Medicover Hospitals, early recognition is key to survival and recovery. “The first four-and-a-half hours after the onset of stroke symptoms are critical for effective treatment,” he said. “Without timely intervention, stroke can lead to permanent brain damage, long-term disability, or even death—every minute counts.”

He advised the public to remember the BEFAST mnemonic for early detection:
B – Balance loss, E – Eye vision changes, F – Face drooping, A – Arm weakness, S – Speech difficulty, and T – Time to call emergency services.

Commitment to Early Intervention and Quality Care

As per the press release, Dr. Ojha emphasized that stroke remains one of India’s leading causes of death and disability, placing an enormous burden on patients, families, and the healthcare system. “Many patients lose precious time because they mistake stroke symptoms for fatigue or simple weakness,” he said. “This delay often costs lives or leaves survivors with lasting paralysis or speech problems.”

He added, “Our goal is not only to treat stroke but also to raise awareness, promote early action, and deliver world-class care that offers patients a second chance at life. Early treatment saves lives and helps preserve quality of life by reducing long-term disability. With this 24×7 stroke unit, we are reaffirming our commitment to delivering rapid, lifesaving care when it matters most.”

A Step Toward a Stroke-Ready City

Sandip Joshi, Center Head at Medicover Hospitals, Navi Mumbai, highlighted the hospital’s patient-focused approach. “With this advanced stroke unit, we have brought together expertise, technology, and compassion under one roof,” he said. “Our aim is to ensure that when a stroke strikes, patients receive the fastest and most effective care possible. We are committed to saving lives and restoring hope for patients and their families.”

Through this initiative, Medicover Hospital aims to set new benchmarks in stroke preparedness and emergency neurological care. The goal is to move Navi Mumbai closer to becoming a stroke-ready city, where quick response translates into saved lives and better recovery outcomes.
