For the first time in Navi Mumbai, Medicover Hospitals has launched a dedicated Andrology Unit to address male reproductive and sexual health concerns. The department provides confidential consultations, evidence-based treatments, and advanced microsurgical care under one roof.

The unit is led by Dr. Sanish Shringarpure, Urologist and Andrologist, along with Dr. Vikas Bhise, Urologist. Together, they aim to deliver ethical, structured, and personalised care for men who have long hesitated to seek medical help for sensitive health issues.

Understanding Andrology and Its Importance

Andrology is a specialised branch of urology that focuses on male reproductive health. It addresses conditions related to fertility, sexual function, hormonal balance, and structural abnormalities of the male reproductive system.

However, many men delay seeking treatment due to embarrassment, stigma, or lack of awareness. To address this gap, the hospital has established the dedicated andrology unit to provide comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of conditions. These include male infertility, erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, varicocele, testosterone deficiency (hypogonadism), Peyronie’s disease, obstructive azoospermia, and abnormalities of the testicles or penis.

In addition, the unit offers structured gender reassignment surgeries for both male-to-female and female-to-male transitions. These procedures are conducted only after thorough hormonal evaluation and consultation with a multidisciplinary medical team.

Advanced Diagnostic and Surgical Procedures

As per the press release, the Andrology Unit provides several advanced procedures designed to manage complex male reproductive and sexual health conditions. These include microsurgical varicocelectomy and penile prosthesis implantation for severe erectile dysfunction.

Furthermore, the department performs specialised sperm retrieval techniques such as testicular sperm aspiration (TESA), testicular sperm extraction (TESE), and micro-TESE to support assisted reproductive technologies like IVF and ICSI.

Other treatments offered include hormonal therapy for hypogonadism, penile curvature correction surgery for Peyronie’s disease, PRP and shockwave therapy for erectile dysfunction, and penile lengthening procedures. The centre also provides comprehensive gender reassignment surgeries with appropriate medical supervision.

Experts Emphasise the Need for Awareness

According to Dr. Sanish Shringarpure, men’s sexual and reproductive health has historically received limited attention. As a result, many patients rely on unsafe or unscientific treatments due to misinformation.

He emphasised that conditions such as infertility, erectile dysfunction, and hormonal imbalance require proper medical evaluation and treatment. Dr. Shringarpure also noted a growing number of young men seeking medically supervised penile lengthening procedures, highlighting the importance of safe and ethical clinical care.

Addressing Underlying Urological Conditions

Dr. Vikas Bhise explained that several common urological conditions—including kidney stones, prostate enlargement, and urinary tract infections—are increasingly being diagnosed. In many cases, erectile dysfunction and infertility arise from underlying urological problems such as varicocele or obstructive azoospermia.

He added that timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment can effectively manage both erectile dysfunction and infertility in many patients.

Breaking the Silence Around Men’s Health

Sandip Joshi, Centre Head at Medicover Hospitals, Navi Mumbai, emphasised that the new clinic aims to normalise conversations around men’s health.

By providing advanced medical care in a confidential and supportive environment, the hospital hopes to encourage more men to seek timely treatment. Ultimately, the initiative aims to improve reproductive health outcomes and enhance overall quality of life.
