Medtronic, a global leader in healthcare technology, has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance for its Stealth AXiS™ surgical system for use in cranial and ear, nose, and throat (ENT) procedures. Earlier in February, the system was cleared for spine surgeries, marking a significant step toward a unified surgical technology platform.
As per the Medtronic Press release, the Stealth AXiS™ system integrates surgical planning, navigation, and robotics into a single intelligent platform, enabling surgeons to perform complex procedures with greater precision, enhanced visualization, and real-time insights. With this latest clearance, Medtronic strengthens its strategy of delivering connected surgical technologies that support multiple specialties through one integrated system.
Advanced Platform Designed to Improve Surgical Precision
Cranial procedures demand exceptional accuracy, detailed planning, and continuous real-time guidance. According to Michael Carter, Senior Vice President and President of Medtronic Cranial & Spinal Technologies, the new system aims to transform surgical workflows.
“Cranial procedures require an exceptional level of precision, planning, and real-time insight. With the Stealth AXiS™ surgical system, we are combining advanced navigation, robotics, and AI-enabled capabilities within the AiBLE™ smart ecosystem to provide surgeons with deeper insights across the surgical workflow,” he said.
By combining these technologies into a single platform, the system supports better surgical planning, enhanced intraoperative guidance, and improved decision-making during complex procedures.
AI-Enabled Architecture Enhances Surgical Planning
One of the defining features of the Stealth AXiS™ surgical system is its AI-enabled architecture, which enhances surgical planning and visualization before, during, and after surgery.
For cranial procedures, the system includes AI-powered automatic tractography, a feature that generates patient-specific brain maps. This capability allows surgeons to visualize critical neural pathways associated with essential brain functions, helping them avoid damage to vital structures during surgery.
In addition, the system integrates intraoperative ultrasound technology through GE HealthCare’s bkActiv™ platform, providing real-time imaging guidance during surgical procedures.
Dr Michael Ivan, neurosurgeon at the University of Miami Health System, emphasised the importance of advanced imaging tools in brain surgery.
“For complex brain surgeries, the more information you have, the better decisions you can make. Pre-operative planning with tools like tractography can help improve surgical efficiency and support better patient outcomes,” he explained.
Enhancing Precision in ENT and Skull Base Surgeries
Beyond cranial procedures, the Stealth AXiS™ system also supports ENT surgeries, particularly those involving the sinuses and skull base, where anatomical structures are extremely delicate and complex.
The platform offers high-precision navigation and advanced visualization, allowing surgeons to clearly identify intricate anatomical pathways. Additionally, the system is designed around real-world ENT surgical workflows, ensuring a familiar and intuitive user experience while introducing advanced technological capabilities.
Dr Vijay Ramakrishnan, board-certified otolaryngologist and professor of Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery at Indiana University School of Medicine, highlighted the role of navigation technology in minimally invasive procedures.
“Intraoperative navigation is critical in minimally invasive endoscopic surgery of the sinuses and skull base. It helps surgeons clearly delineate complex anatomy within high-risk areas. The **Stealth AXiS™ system uses innovative technologies to enhance surgical workflows and support greater efficiency and confidence in the operating room,” he said.
Flexible Platform Designed for Future Surgical Innovation
Another key advantage of the Stealth AXiS™ surgical system lies in its flexible and scalable architecture. The platform has been designed to support continuous software upgrades, expanded capabilities, and deeper integration within Medtronic’s broader digital ecosystem.
This adaptability will allow the system to evolve with future innovations in surgical technology, artificial intelligence, and digital health solutions.
Shaping the Next Era of ENT and Neurosurgical Navigation
Sean Haag, President of the Ear, Nose & Throat business at Medtronic, stated that the system represents a major advancement in surgical navigation technology.
“The Stealth AXiS™ surgical system represents the next era of navigation for ENT surgery. Building on 25 years of navigation leadership, the system is designed to help surgeons operate with greater clarity, confidence, and control in the operating room while also creating a strong platform for the next generation of ENT innovation,” he said.
Advancing Connected Surgical Technologies
With the FDA clearance for cranial and ENT procedures, Medtronic’s Stealth AXiS™ surgical system marks an important step toward fully integrated, AI-enabled surgical platforms. By combining robotics, navigation, imaging, and data-driven insights, the technology aims to support surgeons in delivering more precise procedures and improved patient outcomes across multiple specialties.
