Meenakshi Super Speciality Hospital (MSSH) has strengthened its robotic surgery programme with the launch of the Toumai™ MT-1000 Pro Robotic Surgical System, marking the next phase in its decade-long expertise in robotic-assisted surgery. The advanced platform aims to improve surgical precision, patient safety and clinical outcomes while expanding access to minimally invasive procedures across southern Tamil Nadu.
The hospital will use the system for complex gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, urology, gynaecology, thoracic, breast, thyroid and paediatric surgeries.
Inauguration and Clinical Adoption
Actor and philanthropist Vijay Antony and actor Prashanth Thiagarajan inaugurated the system in the presence of Dr. S. Gurushankar, Chairman, Meenakshi Mission Hospital & Research Centre, Dr. Ramesh Ardhanari, Medical Director, and senior consultants.
The Toumai™ MT-1000 Pro is one of the latest robotic surgical platforms, currently used in more than 60 countries and in over 18,000 procedures worldwide. As per the press release, the platform combines immersive 3D high-definition vision, highly dexterous robotic instruments and advanced imaging technologies to support greater precision during complex surgeries.
Experts Highlight Benefits
Dr. S. Gurushankar said the new robotic system builds on the hospital’s decade of experience in robotic surgery and further strengthens its ability to deliver safer procedures, faster recovery and better clinical outcomes. He added that the platform also supports future remote surgical collaboration, helping expand access to advanced care in South Tamil Nadu.
Dr. Ramesh Ardhanari noted that the system is suitable for a wide range of complex procedures, including gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, urological, gynaecological, thoracic, bariatric, hernia and cancer surgeries, particularly those requiring high precision.
Improved Patient Outcomes
Dr. Mohan, Head of Medical and Surgical Gastroenterology, said robotic-assisted surgery offers several patient benefits, including smaller incisions, less pain, reduced blood loss, lower infection risk, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery. The enhanced 3D visualisation and wristed robotic instruments also help surgeons preserve delicate nerves and tissues during intricate procedures.
Unlike conventional surgery, robotic-assisted surgery is performed through small incisions, with the surgeon controlling every movement from a dedicated console. The system translates the surgeon’s hand movements into precise instrument actions while filtering hand tremors for greater surgical accuracy.
