Cardiologists at Prasad Hospitals, Nacharam, Hyderabad, have successfully treated a rare and life-threatening vascular condition known as Carotid Web in a 62-year-old male patient. The condition, which can obstruct blood flow and cause recurrent brain strokes, was managed through a complex but successful carotid stenting procedure.

Patient’s Struggle and Referral to Prasad Hospitals

Mr. Gowtham Rama Krishna, a resident of Bengaluru, had initially consulted several hospitals in his city in June this year, but doctors were hesitant to take up his case due to the complexity involved. Later, he approached Prasad Hospitals, Nacharam, after suffering an ischemic stroke, which occurs when a blood clot or plaque blocks an artery supplying oxygen-rich blood to the brain.

Diagnosis Through Advanced Imaging

To determine the underlying cause, doctors performed a CT Carotid Angiogram, which revealed a Carotid Web in the Right Internal Carotid Artery (ICA) — a rare structural abnormality that disrupts normal blood flow. The diagnosis was further confirmed using Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA), an advanced imaging technique that provides clear visuals of blood vessels by digitally removing background tissues.

Successful Carotid Stenting Procedure

Following the confirmation, the Cardiology Team at Prasad Hospitals performed a Right ICA Carotid Stenting procedure to clear the plaque and restore normal blood flow to the brain. The procedure, which lasted approximately two hours, was led by Dr. Sampath Kumar Madapati, DM (Cardiology), along with Dr. Enosh, Dr. Sunil, and paramedics Khaja, Anuradha, and Srikanth.

Dr. Sampath explained, “Carotid Web is a rare but treatable cause of stroke. Early diagnosis and timely intervention are crucial to prevent recurrent neurological events. We are delighted to have achieved a successful outcome for the patient.”

Smooth Recovery and Positive Outcome

As per the press release, the surgery was uneventful, and the patient remained hemodynamically stable and symptom-free throughout his hospital stay. After a brief observation period, he was discharged the next day in a stable and satisfactory condition.

The doctors advised that the patient can now lead a normal life by adhering to prescribed medications and maintaining regular follow-ups with the vascular, neurology, and cardiology teams.
