An Indian study has identified 21 new gene types linked to endometriosis, offering hope for earlier diagnosis and better treatment of the condition. Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus. It can cause severe period pain, pelvic pain, infertility and other complications. However, doctors often struggle to diagnose the condition because its symptoms can resemble those of other health problems.
Study Focuses on Indian Women
Researchers conducted a Genome-Wide Association Study involving 2,523 women from different parts of India. The study identified genetic signals that may be specifically associated with endometriosis among Indian women.
As per The Times of India, researchers believe these findings could help improve the understanding of the genetic factors behind endometriosis and may eventually support earlier diagnosis. However, further research is needed before these genetic markers can become part of routine diagnosis.
Hope for Earlier Detection
The findings could help doctors identify women who have a higher risk of developing endometriosis. Therefore, future genetic testing may allow earlier intervention and treatment, potentially reducing the long-term impact of the disease. The study also fills an important gap in research by providing more population-specific genetic information about endometriosis in Indian women.
