A clinical study by Tata Memorial Hospital that suggested papaya leaf extract tablets could help increase platelet counts in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy has come under international scrutiny. Medical experts have raised concerns over the study’s methodology and data, prompting a closer review of its findings.
Study Claimed Faster Platelet Recovery
The Phase III trial involved 219 patients with solid tumours who developed chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia, a condition marked by dangerously low platelet counts. Researchers reported that patients who received standardized papaya leaf extract tablets experienced quicker platelet recovery, fewer chemotherapy delays, and fewer dose reductions than those given a placebo. The treatment also cost around ₹300–350 for a 10-day course, making it a significantly cheaper alternative to existing platelet-boosting therapies.
Concerns Trigger Scientific Review
However, the study has now attracted attention from the global medical community after questions emerged regarding its research methods and the reliability of the published data. Experts have stressed that while the findings appear promising, they require further validation through independent review and replication before they can influence routine clinical practice.

Meanwhile, Tata Memorial Centre researchers have defended the study, stating that the concerns are part of the scientific review process and that the evidence should be assessed through rigorous evaluation rather than public debate. Although papaya leaf extract has long been used as a supportive remedy in dengue patients, oncologists maintain that additional independent studies are essential before recommending it widely for chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia.
