Doctors at KIMS ICON Hospital, Visakhapatnam, successfully managed an exceptionally rare and complex kidney injury in a 17-year-old boy following a road traffic accident.
Rare Trauma Case Identified After Road Accident
Palle Ravichandra Kumar from Anakapalli was brought to the hospital with severe abdominal pain after the accident. Although initial examination suggested internal injury, detailed evaluation and advanced imaging studies revealed a Pelvi-Ureteric Junction (PUJ) avulsion—a complete separation between the renal pelvis and the ureter.
An Exceptionally Rare Finding in a Duplex Kidney
Further investigations uncovered an additional complexity. The injury had occurred in a duplex kidney, a congenital condition in which a single kidney contains two separate urinary drainage systems. Blunt trauma rarely causes PUJ avulsion; however, its occurrence in a duplex kidney is considered extraordinarily uncommon. Notably, doctors found no associated injury to other abdominal organs, which made the diagnosis even more unusual.
Timely Surgical Intervention with Anatomical Precision
Given the severity of the injury and the altered renal anatomy, the medical team proceeded with immediate surgical intervention. Dr. Sandeep Maheshwar Reddy Kallam, Consultant Urologist, Laparoscopic Uro-Oncologist and Andrologist, led the procedure alongside Dr. Murali Krishna and Dr. Siva Sai Bharadwaj.
As per the press release, the team performed meticulous reconstructive surgery to restore urinary continuity while preserving maximum kidney function. Because of the duplex system, the surgeons exercised extreme precision to identify and repair the disrupted structures without compromising the remaining drainage pathway.
Successful Recovery and Discharge
Following surgery, the patient responded well to treatment and showed steady clinical improvement. He was subsequently discharged in stable condition.
The doctors attributed the positive outcome to early diagnosis, advanced imaging, prompt surgical decision-making, and coordinated multidisciplinary care.
