After corporate heavyweights such as Zydus and the Adani Group, power and pharmaceutical major Torrent Group has made a decisive entry into the rapidly expanding hospital sector. Torrent Hospitals Private Limited, a group subsidiary, will develop a 500-plus-bed multispecialty hospital along Ahmedabad’s SP Ring Road, with an investment exceeding ₹750 crore, according to project filings.
Large-Scale Multispecialty Hospital Planned in Ahmedabad
Promoted by the Torrent Group, the hospital will come up on a 13,896 sq metre land parcel and feature a proposed built-up area of 95,814 sq metres, positioning it among Ahmedabad’s largest private healthcare projects. Once operational, the facility is expected to generate at least 2,400 jobs, as per company submissions.
Strategic Land Acquisition Supports Expansion
To support the project, Torrent acquired the land in mid-2025 for ₹247 crore from Safal Constructions India Private Limited. The acquisition underscores the group’s long-term commitment to establishing a significant presence in core hospital services.
Building an End-to-End Healthcare Ecosystem
As reported by TOI, Torrent’s entry into hospital services builds on its earlier healthcare initiatives. In 2022, the group launched Torrent Diagnostics Private Limited, marking its entry into the diagnostics space. With the new hospital project, Torrent aims to create an integrated healthcare ecosystem spanning pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, and tertiary care services.
Project Nears Key Regulatory Clearances
Currently, the hospital project is at an advanced stage of approvals, with statutory and zoning clearances underway. The company expects to move ahead with construction once the remaining regulatory processes are completed.
Ahmedabad Sees Post-Covid Hospital Capacity Expansion
Torrent’s hospital venture comes amid a sharp post-Covid expansion in hospital bed capacity across Ahmedabad. Corporate hospital chains and large-scale acquisitions have driven this growth. In 2021, CIMS Hospital was acquired by Marengo Asia Healthcare in a ₹450 crore deal. More recently, HCG Hospitals expanded its cancer care centre in the city into a 217-bed facility.
Part of a Broader Healthcare Investment Wave in Gujarat
Torrent’s investment also aligns with a broader trend of major healthcare bets by Gujarat-based business groups in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. In February 2025, the Adani Group announced plans to build an advanced multispecialty hospital in Ahmedabad. Meanwhile, Zydus Hospitals, which already operates a multispecialty facility on SG Road, is planning a 290-bed hospital in the Ghodasar area at an estimated cost of ₹105 crore, on the site of its former manufacturing plant.
Rising Demand Drives Multispecialty Hospital Growth
Industry experts attribute the growing demand for large multispecialty hospitals to several factors. These include higher health insurance penetration, rising disposable incomes, and an increasing preference for comprehensive, multidisciplinary care delivered under one roof.
