As India prepares to celebrate the International Day of Yoga on June 21, Uttarakhand is making significant strides in becoming a national leader in Ayurveda, Yoga, and wellness tourism. Under the guidance of Deependra Chaudhary, Secretary, AYUSH Department, the state is transforming its traditional healing systems into engines of rural development, healthcare access, and employment.

IDY 2025: Historic Celebration in Bhararisain

For the first time, Uttarakhand will host the International Day of Yoga at Bhararisain (Gairsain), its summer capital. Dignitaries, ambassadors from eight countries, students, public representatives, and yoga enthusiasts will join the celebrations, aligning with the Common Yoga Protocol.

Ground-Level Implementation Drives Growth

From Rishikesh to Pithoragarh, the state is developing yoga retreats, naturopathy clinics, and Ayurvedic resorts. Through initiatives like AYUSH Grams, Panchakarma centres, and medicinal plant hubs, wellness tourism is not only drawing international visitors but also creating sustainable livelihoods.

Leadership Rooted in Simplicity and Action

Chaudhary, an IAS officer from a humble farming background, champions a “field before file” governance model. His commitment has led to landmark reforms including the Uttarakhand AYUSH Policy 2024 and India’s first dedicated Yoga Policy.

Holistic Vision for Development

Under CM Pushkar Singh Dhami’s leadership, AYUSH is being integrated into healthcare, education, and tourism. AYUSH units are now present in hospitals statewide, while research and education are expanding through institutions like Rishikul Ayurvedic College and Patanjali University.

Empowering Communities and Youth

As reported by Garhwal Post, the department is training women’s self-help groups in herbal product-making. It is also offering scholarships, PG diplomas, and start-up support to youth. With public-private partnerships, wellness infrastructure is scaling up rapidly.

Towards a Global Wellness Destination

Uttarakhand is poised to become the global capital of AYUSH. Herbal trails, yoga villages, and international festivals are in the pipeline. These initiatives are rooted in tradition, backed by science, and driven by innovation.
