Despite the discovery of penicillin nearly a century ago and the introduction of more than 300 antibiotics, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) continues to grow, posing a major threat to public health. In India, multidrug-resistant infections are estimated to cause around 10 lakh deaths annually—more than four times the number of lives lost during the COVID-19 pandemic each year.
Creating a Platform for Scientific Dialogue
To address this growing challenge, Wockhardt has launched the Wockhardt Antibiotic Academy, an open scientific learning platform for registered medical professionals across India. The Academy aims to promote continuous medical education through knowledge exchange, scientific discussions and sharing of real-world clinical experiences.
According to the press release, the initiative seeks to encourage evidence-based approaches to antimicrobial resistance and support clinicians in making informed treatment decisions.
“An urgent need exists not only for new antibiotics such as Zaynich, but also for a science-based platform that encourages constructive dialogue on antimicrobial resistance and its appropriate management,” said Dr. Habil Khorakiwala, Founder Chairman, Wockhardt. He emphasised the importance of using the right antibiotic for the right patient at the right time.
Strengthening Antimicrobial Stewardship
Dr. Subramaniam Swaminathan, President, Clinical Infectious Diseases Society, India, noted that combating resistance requires informed decisions at the patient’s bedside. He highlighted how emerging evidence continues to refine antimicrobial stewardship practices, particularly in areas such as diagnosis, dosing, treatment duration and de-escalation.
The Academy will therefore bring clinicians together to exchange knowledge, discuss evidence and remain connected with developments in infectious diseases and antimicrobial stewardship.
Building a Nationwide Scientific Movement
Wockhardt said the Academy reflects its commitment to creating a collaborative platform where scientific evidence, clinical experience and knowledge can come together. The company will facilitate interactions with national and international experts in infectious diseases, AMR and antimicrobial stewardship.
