Wadhwani AI has announced that its AI-powered diabetic retinopathy (DR) screening solution, MadhunetrAI, emerged as a winner of the AI for ALL: Global Impact Challenge at the India AI Impact Summit 2026.

The competition drew over 4,650 applications from more than 60 countries, recognising scalable artificial intelligence solutions that address pressing societal challenges.

Strengthening Early Detection of Diabetic Retinopathy

MadhunetrAI enables frontline healthcare workers to conduct early screening for diabetic retinopathy using AI-assisted analysis of retinal images. By identifying vision-threatening conditions at an early stage, the solution helps bridge gaps in specialist access, particularly in underserved and resource-constrained communities.

India faces a significant diabetes burden, and delayed screening often leads to preventable vision loss. Therefore, expanding early detection at the primary-care level remains critical to reducing avoidable blindness.

Focus on Public Health, Not Commercial Gain

Wadhwani AI emphasised that its approach prioritises universal access over commercial returns. Instead of building proprietary, margin-driven products, the organisation focuses on developing public digital health infrastructure that expands coverage and ensures affordability.

By addressing diabetic retinopathy as a public health challenge rather than a market opportunity, the initiative aims to ensure sight-saving care reaches vulnerable populations, regardless of their ability to pay. The organisation underscored its guiding philosophy of “Sarvajan Hitay, Sarvajan Sukhay”—well-being and benefit for all.

National Scale-Up Across Multiple States

With the support of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Wadhwani AI has begun scaling MadhunetrAI across India’s public healthcare ecosystem.

As per the LinkedIn post of Wadhwani AI, the solution is currently being deployed in partnership with National Health Mission Rajasthan, National Health Mission Meghalaya, National Health Mission Assam, and National Health Mission Odisha.

In addition, several leading medical institutions have adopted the technology, including LLRM Medical College Meerut, King George’s Medical University, Government Institute of Medical Sciences, and MGM Medical College.

Collaboration with AIIMS Delhi

Wadhwani AI developed and validated the solution in collaboration with All India Institute of Medical Sciences Delhi. The partners continue to work closely to strengthen clinical integration and expand the solution’s reach within the public health system.

Advancing AI for Public Good

The award reinforces Wadhwani AI’s mission to build artificial intelligence solutions that deliver measurable public health impact. By combining innovation with large-scale deployment, the organisation aims to ensure that preventable blindness due to diabetic retinopathy becomes increasingly rare across India.
